City Emergency Facilities
In a disaster, communication is indispensable. Telephone systems may be
damaged by the disaster or overloaded by calls. The City needs to
quickly find out what is happening within the community, and residents
need to know what is happening so that they can respond accordingly.
The City of Torrance has established Area Disaster Centers as the focal points for residents in a local area to receive and transmit necessary information relating to a disaster in progress. Area Disaster Centers are located in branch libraries and other city buildings.
Emergency Operations Centers are locations that will be used for planning and support when ordinary facilities are inadequate.
Antennas have been installed at Torrance Area Disaster Centers,
Emergency Operations Centers, and public Schools for use by TARA members
providing communications services during drills, exercises and actual
emergencies.
TARA has antennas installed at each of the Area Disaster Centers.
In the event of an emergency, TARA volunteers will be requested to
respond to these locations to work with city staff.
Area Disaster Centers will also be used to register disaster volunteers. During a disaster, people who wish to volunteer to help may register at their local area disaster center to receive assignments.
