OVARIAN CANCER - THE SILENT DISEASE

Trisha, Rachel, Suzie & Frewin are raising money for ovarian cancer research and hope to raise awareness of what has been called "the silent cancer." Ovarian Cancer is currently the fifth leading cause of cancer death among women. Proceeds from the Paddle for Ovarian Cancer will go to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. This is a non-profit organization that is devoted to finding early diagnostic tests and ultimately a cure for ovarian cancer.

SOME STATS ON OVARIAN CANCER
*Ovarian Cancer is the leading cause of death from gynelogical cancers in the US
*23000 women in the US are diagnosed each year
*Over 14,000 lose their lives to it each year
*Currently there is no effective means of early detection for ovarian cancer
*just over half of women diagnosed with ov will survive longer than five years
*if detected and treated early there is a 90% survival rate
*The most effective way a woman can protect herself against ovarian cancer is to become educated about the disease and her own body*

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
*vague but persistent and unexplained gastrointestinal complaints such as gas, nausea, and indigestion
*pelvic and/or abdominal swelling and /or pain; bloating and/or feeling of fullness
*unexplained change in bowel habits
*unexplained weight gain or loss
*frequency and/or urgency of urination
*new and unexplained abnormal postmenopausal bleeding
