James Thomas was born in Alma, Georgia on May 20, 1920. His father was James Leon Thomas, Sr. and his mother was Mamie Lee (Holton) Thomas.
On December 7, 1940 he married Thelma Lou Courson in Baxley, Georgia. Together they had four children: James Leon Thomas, Gerald Lee Thomas, Glenda Faye (Thomas) Freeman, and Kenneth Thomas.
He passed away March 13, 1971 in Atlanta, Georgia.
