To Build A Rail For Grinding On

1. Obtain, by any means, legal or other wise, an iron rail about 8 feet long. It should be about 1.5 inch in diameter, and the metal should be about 1/4 inch thick. These are the kind of rails used to line the top and bottom of the fences at public playgrounds. They are very strong, and reasonably light (About 20 lbs). You can use PVC, but it is not strong enough (in my opinion) for what you want to use it for. It also does not even closely recreate the feel of sliding on a metal handrail.

2. Get a power drill that plugs in. Find or purchase drill bits made for cutting metal. I recommend Carbide, Titanium Nitride, or Zirconium Nitride drill bits. They are available for about $5 a bit from Sears. I strongly recommend you buy them. Anyway, you need two. These plans call for a 3/8 inch and a 1/4 drill bit.

3. Take an 8 foot 2x4 and lie it horizontally on the 2 inch face, and make sure it's on a level surface.

4. Place the pole horizontally on the rail, and allign it perfectly with the 2x4. Have a friend hold it in place.

5. Put the 3/8 drill bit in your drill. And make sure it is in tightly.

6. Drill completely through the top of the rail(as it lies horizontally) at about 2 inches from both ends. Now drill one at approximately the middle.

7. Put in the 1/4 inch drill bit. Drill through the other side of the rail directly below where the 3/8 inch holes were. Try not to drill into the wood.

8. Using a magnetic screw driver, take a thick, strong, solid screw, Not A Drywall Screw -they are strong, but brittle, and will snap if you exert a lateral stress upon them- and place it on the end of the screwdriver, and stick the whole screw through the center top hole, and the screw, up to the head, through the center bottom hole. The head should fit through the top hole, but not the bottom hole. Now screw the screw in while your friend holds the rail on the 2x4.

9. Repeat Number 8 for the two end screws. Screw the screws tightly, till the rail does shake or vibrate from the 2x4.

10. Cut 3 one-foot-long sections of 2x4. Nail these sections to the bottom of the 2x4 at both ends and in the middle. Put 2 long, thin nails in each section to secure it perpendicularly to the 2x4 below the rail. Look Below.

11. Wax Rail very lightly using a candle.

12. Grind.
