Four activists from Association BALADRE, based in Basqueland and Spain, will tour North America along with several Food Not Bombs activists during October and November of 1997. Sara Nieto, Salva Ronda, Monolo Saez, and Andoni Estrella are members of BALADRE. Association BALADRE is an Iberian Peninsula-wide association which coordinates actions against unemployment, poverty and social exclusion. Food Not Bombs is a group of volunteers that share free food in protest of war and poverty in North America, Europe and Australia.
Food Not Bombs and BALADRE have been working together for several years. Together, they've organized two Food Not Bombs tours of Spain and the Basqueland. BALADRE translated, published and distributed the Spanish edition of the book, "Food Not Bombs, How to Feed the Hungry and Build Community." This translation, "Comidas, no bombas," as well as "Contra la Europa del capital," by professor Ramon Fernandez Duran were suggested reading for a conference on the social and economic effects of the Maastricht Treaty and European economic unity.
This conference was organized by a coalition of groups from all over Europe that included Zambra and BALADRE. They met in Murcia, Spain from October 28 through November 1, 1996 to consider an organized response to globalization. This summer BALADRE attended the European-wide conference and resistance to the Maastricht Treaty, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Thousands of people protested outside the Commission on European Economic Unity, clashing with the Amsterdam police. One group of Italian activists arrived in Amsterdam on a train they had taken over in Italy. They refused to pay the train fare or show their passports claiming Free Trade should be everyone right. BALADRE will share these and other stories about resistance to corporate exploitation.
BALADRE will show their powerful video, "50 Years is Enough," and will report on the European activists' responses to economic and social globalization. There will also be free vegetarian food and a low-watt Free FM Radio station that will broadcast the program and other radio documentaries on globalization. Punk performance artist SETH will blast out his powerful anti-corporate music that will inspire the audience to take direct action against the system of exploitation.
The corporations do not recognize national borders, so people organizing
against corporate exploitation must also work to erase national boundaries.
