A Daily Inspiration and Personal Reflection
OUT OF THE ORDINARY
--Brian Shipman, WWJD Today (excerpt)

The phone rang in Misty's room...and she calmly picked up the phone. "The President is coming to our town?" Misty screamed. "Why?" As she listened intently to her friend's explanation, she couldn't believe her ears..."What am I going to wear?" Misty wondered aloud.

The first Community Church normally had a Sunday attendance of 45. However, news of the President's visit had spread so rapidly that preparations were being made to accommodate more .They set out extra chairs inside and outside the church building-- perhaps to hold 200 total. It still wasn't enough.

When Sunday came, over 1500 people tried to crowd in and around the small church as the President attended the service. It was their highest attendance in history.

A week later, the small sign out in front of First Community Church read, "The President isn't here this week, But God is." They had 42 people in attendance.

Amazing, isn't it? People will flock to see or hear someone famous, just so they can say, "I went to Church with the the President." But what happens when God shows up? Does anyone care?

In Matthew 13:53-58, Jesus went to His hometown, to the synagogue. There He preached. They had heard about Jesus' miracles, and now they heard His extraordinary words. But they knew Jesus. They watched Him grow up -- playing with the other boys and girls in town. They knew His father and mother. So they assumed He couldn't be great because He seemed so ordinary.

Sometimes we get used to God -- it's sad but true. We get used to going to church, [to prayer meetings]...meeting with the youth, praying over our food, and we assume God isn't really that big of a deal anymore. We put God and His power into a little box. We lose our faith in Him. We expect Him only to do a few, simple things. And, like the people of Jesus' hometown, God is unable to do many miracles because of our lack of faith.

Do you feel like you get used to God that you forget He's there? What causes you to feel that way? Have you ever had a big problem or need that you assumed God wouldn't handle because it was out of the ordinary?...

Ask God to help you to get to know Him -- again. That you will realize His power and His love. Remember all that God has done in your life. Thank Him and praise Him for being the God that He is.

PRAYER

"Lord, may your word take deep root in my heart and that I may bear good fruit for your glory. May I hunger for your righteousness now that I may look forward to the day of judgment with joy rather than with dismay."
