After Maddie witnesses a murder, and narrowly escapes being killed herself, a police officer named Sergeant Donogan is assigned to watch her 24 hours a day until the case is solved and the killer is caught.
Maddie's cousin Annie, whom we first met two episodes ago, continues her relationship with David, and tells Maddie that she is happy, that she feels "a sense of freedom" that she hasn't felt in a long time, and that she believes that her relationship with David is getting serious.
Still, everyone is increasingly uncomfortable with this. Maddie's discomfort shows when she has to lie to cover for Annie when Annie's husband calls asking for her. David's discomfort shows when he barges in on a lunch between Maddie and Annie, and accuses Maddie of holding this lunch to warn Annie away from him. And Annie feels uncomfortably like she's in the middle of lingering animosity between Maddie and David.
David and Bert do some detective work and identify Donogan as the guilty party, but of course they're wrong. Just as David arrives at Maddie's house to confront him, first one cop then another and another and finally a whole S.W.A.T team arrives – demolishing Maddie's home in the process – to catch the bad guys.
