With Maddie still in Chicago, David is not sure when to expect her back, or even whether she'll ever come back. But he's trying to be ready for her if she does. He's been reading pregnancy and maternity books, trying to understand what Maddie is experiencing, and he's asking Bert and Agnes for their help.
Finally, Agnes gives him the idea to attend a Lamaze class, and as a result he meets Terry Knowles, a single pregnant woman close to her delivery date, who is also looking for a Lamaze partner. They both agree to help each other through Lamaze and through Terry's delivery, because the know that they need each other's help.
As time goes on, they take the class together and get to know one another, and we learn that David is feeling very uncomfortable about his relationship with Maddie. On the one hand, it bothers him that he doesn't know whether he's the father of her baby, or whether she intends to let him continue to be part of her life after the baby is born, and also that she's been away for so long but that she hasn't said very much to him the whole time she's been gone. But on the other hand, he knows that he wants to be there for her when and if the two of them ever get their problems straightened out.
We also learn that Terry is a music theory professor who wants to be a single mother, although at the conclusion of this episode, she confesses to David that he has led her to rethink that decision, and that she wants their relationship to continue even after she's had her baby – which does nothing to make David any more comfortable.
Meanwhile, David sends all of his pregnancy books to Maddie in Chicago, without a note of explanation, whereupon she decides at last to return from Chicago and come back home, which she will do in next week's episode.

This episode title is occasionally referred to as “The Stork Club”.
When Maddie receives her package from David, we see the following addresses on the mailing label:
From: Blue Moon Investigations
15555 Century Park East
Century City, Ca. 91302
To: Ms. Maddie Hayes
88 East Oak Ave. Lakeshore
Chicago, ILL.
The address for Blue Moon is the same one given in the episode Camille. As I discuss in the notes for that episode, the address is not real.
Meanwhile, there is also no 88 East Oak Ave in Chicago, although there is an 88 East Oak Street that is a scant two blocks from Lakeshore Drive and Lake Michigan.
