David Addison faces what may be his lowest and most discouraging moment, professionally, financially, and in terms of his personal reputation and his integrity and his honor.
The Blue Moon finances are not healthy. We first learned this two episodes ago, and David's prolonged absence from Blue Moon during the last two-part episode has only made things worse. By the start of this episode, all of Blue Moon's office furniture is being repossessed and the office staff has mutinied because their paychecks have all bounced. Even Agnes, the most loyal and optimistic of all of the office staff, loses her temper with David, saying that "for weeks now you've been letting yourself go to hell, and you've been taking all the rest of us with you." She accuses him of "ruining everything we have," and that "you did this to Blue Moon."
In the middle of all of this, Maddie's parents have finally learned about her pregnancy. Maddie's mother is supportive, and says that she is happy. But Maddie's father, on the other hand, is furious. In a rage, and without telling either Maddie or Mrs. Hayes, he cancels all his business plans for the day and takes a flight to Los Angeles to confront David.
During this confrontation, it is obvious to Mr. Hayes that the business is failing, because the office is empty of both furniture and staff. When David tries to cover himself by saying that the office is in the midst of being redecorated, Leonard Haven, the accountant (whom we first met two episodes ago), drops in to warn David of the seriousness of his financial situation. Moreover, as Mr. Hayes announces to David that he's being irresponsible and sloughing off his obligations to Maddie, just at that moment Rita (the girl he picked up in a bar and slept with that night, two episodes ago) comes by, kisses him affectionately, and asks, in a sexy and inviting voice, if they are "still friends."
None of this is making David look good in Maddie's father's eyes. Mr. Hayes's disgust and hostility are blistering as he accuses David of leaving Maddie and moving on to the next blonde who comes along (meaning Rita), of running Maddie's business into the ground, and of being directly responsible for failing to live up to his duty as far as Maddie and her child are concerned.
David tries to explain himself, but Mr. Hayes doesn't (or won't) listen. Finally, in the depths of the failure that lies all around him, he makes one last stand. He buys a ticket for the same flight on which Mr. Hayes returns to Chicago, and confronts him a final time. Angry and desperate to make himself heard, David explains the whole story to Mr. Hayes – about Sam, about Maddie leaving, about the fact that the baby may or may not be David's, and that Maddie wasn't even planning to tell David about the baby. From the depths of his heart David confesses to Mr. Hayes that he loves her, that he "wants to grow old with [her]" and "would give up [his] life for her."
"Believe it or not, out of this whole mess, we've got a dead heat between things I did right and things I did wrong.... I didn't come here to tell you that your daughter is a bad guy. But I'm not a bad guy either. Thank you for listening."
A little later in the flight, Mr. Hayes comes to David to reconcile with him. He tells him that he is sorry, and that he now understands. He even offers David a loan to get the business back on its feet, and says that he knows he can trust David to repay the loan. David asks him point blank what he would say if Maddie should discover that the two men have met each other today, and Mr. Hayes says, compassionately, that he'll have "a very good answer" for her.
