Moonlighting, Season Four

Tale in Two Cities

Air Dates: 3 Nov 1987, 26 Jul 1988

Synopsis:

In Chicago:

Maddie's been at her parents' house now for weeks. Remember that she arrived there between A Trip to the Moon and Come Back Little Shiksa, and that in the previous episode, Maddie's father expressed concern that she wasn't vacationing, but that she was hiding. He expresses the same concern at the start of this episode, and of course Maddie denies it.

Her parents, perplexed that she won't talk with them about what's bothering her, but knowing that she needs cheering up, decide to throw a party for her. She resists, but they throw the party anyway, and so she escapes with one of the party guests, Steven Hill, a neighbor of her parents who is also a doctor.

When she tells him that she's not feeling well, he offers to examine her, which is when she learns for the first time that she is pregnant. At the conclusion of the episode Maddie leaves an answering machine message for Agnes, the same message that Agnes receives at the start of Cool Hand Dave, telling her that Maddie is pregnant, and pleading with her not to tell David.

In Los Angeles:

As in the previous episode, both David and Agnes are concerned that neither of them has heard from Maddie. In an attempt to make Agnes feel better, David lies, saying that he's in constant contact with Miss Hayes. But we know better. Privately, David leaves a stinging answering machine message for Maddie, telling her that he is done waiting for her, and that he is going to get on with his life.

Meanwhile, the office finances are falling apart – clearly, David is not the one who balanced the checkbook while Maddie was around. An accountant, Leonard Haven, shows up to inform David that his accounts are in serious financial trouble, setting the stage for the financial devastation which strikes Blue Moon later in Father Knows Last.

Meanwhile, Bert is fuming with jealousy over Agnes's interest in MacGilicuddy. We know that she is just being his friend – she's a good listener, he tells her, as he describes his breakup with his wife, which we learned about in the previous episode – but Bert is certain that he's losing Agnes to MacGilicuddy. In a rage, Bert even threatens to run him down in the parking garage until David shows up, cools Bert down, and takes him to a bar.

While there, they discuss women. David tells him that relationships are not worth the trouble. "As soon as they know you care, they start zipping up the body bag." Bert insists that "somewhere, there has got to be a woman who is worth it," and David responds, "I don't think so." Between this comment and his phone call to Maddie's answering machine, we know that David has had enough of waiting for a relationship with Maddie.

At the bar, David and Bert meet two women, Rita and Genevieve, and return to their home. Just as Bert and Genevieve settle into her hot tub, Bert has an attack of conscience, because even though things aren't right between him and Agnes, he still loves her, and what he's doing "just isn't right." David sends him home with the car, and stays behind to spend the night with Rita.
