The subject of JROTC is - YOU the high school student.  JROTC is all about you.  You are its whole point.  It's devoted to the development of young people, both as students and as individuals.  Established by Congress in 1916, Army JROTC has demonstrated over the decades that it works.  Junior ROTC cadets who take the course for all four years graduate from high school at a higher rate than the school as a whole.  Principals, parents, and former cadets consistently praise JROTC for its positive impact on the school, the community, and the cadets themselves.

Junior ROTC is an elective high school course taken during regular school hours for academic credit but includes many out-of-classroom activities.  We cover the American military's role in history, technology awareness, physical fitness, first aid, marksmanship, and drill and ceremonies.  But we also teach leadership skills (like how to motivate others)  We also offer four extracurricular activities: Drill Team, Color Guard, Rifle Team, and Raiders.  You might even get a chance to go to JROTC Summer Camp where your training will include confidence courses, team sports, helicopter rides, land navigation, water safety, and marksmanship.

You do not have to join the military after graduation.   We are an official element of the US Army but our interest is simply to give you an opportunity to develop and improve yourself in ways schools generally don't offer.  Riverview JROTC wants what is best for you.  If you choose to join the Armed Forces your JROTC experience will translate to higher rank, pay, and greater college scholarship opportunities.  We teach military, non-combat, skills and use a military organization to teach self-discipline, confidence, and pride in a job well done.  It is in this sense that JROTC is part of the Army's service to the nation.

What is most important in JROTC?  Doing it, not just reading about it- It's playing on a winning team.  Team spirit. That's what JROTC is all about.  JROTC is not taught like a regular class.   Much of our teaching isn't teaching at all.  It's training.  We train you for leadership by letting you lead.  We train you to be physically confident by letting you rappel from a 40 foot tower.  We train you in teamwork by having you solve problems as a member of a group.  We train you to take pride in your physical appearance by showing you how to wear a uniform properly.  We train you to speak in public by letting you choose a subject and helping you teach it to the class or by giving commands in front of 195+ cadets on the parade field.

Said one of our graduates, "JROTC taught me to be Motivated, Dedicated, and to Never Give Up."
