Changes to Fred's Web Site...
Go BaaackBack to the front page...

July 28, 2001:  It's been around six months since the last update, the biggest change being a replacement site menu which won't crash browsers 50% of the time - like the last one did.  Most of the links from one page to another within Fred's Web Site have been fixed after the move from one ISP to another, although I'm sure there's still a few I haven't caught.  I suspect that I could have gotten this done a lot faster had I not chosen to through a change in marital status & all the paperwork that goes with it...  Well anyway, work continues on this site, and I'll be updating my web pages a little more frequently than before.
January 24, 2001:  I've managed to move my entire website over to Earthlink, after having been given a one week notice from my old ISP that they were going to close up my accounts as they were going out of the ISP business.  Not everything is working, though, some images and pages don't load properly, some javascript is still malfunctioning.  I expect to get these problems fixed over time, though.  Meanwhile, if you've managed to find my web page, have a look around.
October 30, 2000:  Seems like I've been doing other things that are keeping me away from working on my website...  Anyway, four months have passed since the last update, and I figured I'd at least update one page that seriously needed it.  Since the world of television is constantly changing, most of my "Television & Radio" page had become rife with obsolete links & stuff that had just plain gone dead.  So I updated it.  A lot of links to old, cancelled television shows were removed, and some links were updated to point to the right places.  A few new things were even added, like the live webcams from KMGH (the local ABC affiliate).  Now that it's winter, maybe I can update this site more frequently, since I'm not out working on the yard so much.  Don't forget to vote!  We've got to do better than the turnout in 1996...
June 09, 2000:  The new navigation menu is complete, and is installed on most of my web pages.  It took a long time to get it working, but it saves a lot of space on my server compared to the old one I had, and is less processor-hungry than it's predecesor.  The "Weather" page got most of my attention during this last update period, mostly to correct links that weren't pointing to the right information anymore.  It seems that the webmasters of most of the weather sites I reference on that page justify their jobs by constantly changing the addresses of their web pages.  Some new stuff was added to the "Weather" page, including local & national soil moisture level maps and a precipitation forecast map (important to those with yards), a windchill map, and in the 'Other' section, a daily earthquake report map (you never know when that information might come in handy...)  The list of ISP's and their spam complaint addresses in the "Spam Wars" section has now surpassed 300, and I've continued to make minor changes to improve the "Spam War Tools" page.
April 19, 2000:  I didn't dissapear, although it's been three months since I've posted an update for my site... I've been working on a new navigation menu that uses javascript rather than compiled java code to replace the processor-power hungry menu on the front page & the pull-down menus on most of my other pages - so while there hasn't been much change lately to what you're seeing now, it is changing in the background...  Meanwhile, I've cleaned out a few dead links on the "FJL Today" page, and added some more commercial sites to the "Television Commercials" page including: 'Petstore.com', 'Petsmart', 'Petco', 'iydkydg', 'Orthotri-cyclen', 'Xenical', 'Sonata', 'Prozac', 'John Elway AutoNation', and 'Discount Tires'.
January 15, 2000:  Apparently, the web is Y2K compliant...  "Fred's Engineering Stuff" was given a thorough cleaning to remove and/or repair some dead links, while some new stuff was added:  In the Information About Other Stuff section, 'Pneumatics 101' was added.  In the Hardware & Stuff section/Catalogs of Catalogs area, 'Data Galaxy' became the replacement for 'Industry.net' with more faster stuff, and the 'Universal Parts Center' was added.  In the H&S/Online Companies section, 'Parker', 'Ingersoll-Rand', 'Ross Controls', and 'numatics' were added.  The "Spam Wars" page was split apart into three sectons to make it easier to download & read.  The number of complaint addresses for ISP's that have made my list has exceeded 200.  See the top of "Spam Wars" for more information about changes to those pages.
November 18, 1999:  If you haven't noticed yet, there's a countdown timer on the front page ticking away until the third Hubble Service Mission - actually called service mission 3A - which is really needed since on November 13th a fourth gyroscope (out of six) failed in the space telescope, forcing it into safe mode where it can't carry out it's observations.  The "Space" page sections about AXAF, Hubble, and SIRTF were all updated with little bits of new information.  My friend Manus hit the big time when his game Diplomatic Pouch was released as a computer game by Hasbro Interactive.  You can find links to it on the "Off Center" page in the Manus section, and on the "Computer Stuff" page in the Computer Games section.  On the "TV Commercials" web page, the count is up to 210 websites from TV commercials, with the addition of 'Stamps.com', 'fitskin.com from Noxema', 'Meineke mufflers', the 'Turbonium' site from Volkswagen, 'FTD', 'Xerox', and 'Kleenex'.
October 14, 1999:  Added the search engines 'LookSmart', 'Northern Light', 'Ask Jeeves' and 'Snap' to the multi-search engine utility along with a new column of search engines which search reference information including a Dictionary, Thesaurus, Encyclopedia, and 'Bartletts Quotations' at the bottom of the front page.  After installing Windows 98 on my computer, I now have MS Internet Explorer as an integrated part of my operating system, so I decided to have a look at this website from it's perspective, and have been reworking (that means fixing something, for you non-engineers) various pages as needed to display properly under IE  - I managed to fix a few, but it's an ongoing project with any website.
September 01, 1999:  Added several search interfaces to all sorts of information on the "Library", "Kidstuff", and the parents/teachers resources page which can be reached from the "Kidstuff" page, to make getting to information more direct.  Also on the "Kidstuff" page, the 'Hamster Dance', the 'Fishy Dance', the 'Cow Dance' were added, along with the site that these entertaining sites all originate from.  Also added  was the 'Nickelodeon Channel'.  After having done that, I proceeded to start over and do it all again after a hard drive crash...
July 01, 1999:  I didn't dissapear off the face of the earth, but the data on my hard drive (including the web pages I was updating) did.  I was able to restore my pages from a backup, but I lost all the work in progress.  In the upcoming update, I will be adding search engine interface forms to the "Kidstuff" and "Library" pages to sites that use search engines to look up data.  Also look for even more links to those websites that are advertised in television commercials, some of which are added at each update.
April 15, 1999:  I was away for a while with such projects as my taxes, helping my first grader with her science project, and repairing my fence after one of our rocky mountain hurricane-force windstorms, but I was still able to update the site somewhat...  In the "Space" section, a paragraph has been added about STS-103, an unplanned service mission to the Hubble Space Telescope to replace failing components of it's guidance system, and a paragraph about SWAS's record-breaking performance has been added to the "SWAS" page (accessible from the "Space" page).  The list on the "TV Commercials" web sites page has broken 200 with the addition of 'Flonase', 'Detrol', 'Foreclosure Magazine', 'Chevron', 'Dole', '1-800-Contacts', 'Wrangler', and 'E*Trade'.
February 13, 1999:  Extensively overhauled the "Space" page to clean up dead links, update some information, and to expand the information about the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the SIRTF observatory, and added links to a NASA page that shows you where Hubble is right now, and to the 'Hubble Pictures of the Month'.  Added the 'Denver Museum of Natural History' and 'Homework Central' to the "Kids Stuff" page.  Added the 'Swedish Chef, Jive, Valspeak, or Pig Latin' translator to the "Weird Stuff" page.  Added 'Reuters Aerospace News' to "FJL Today".  Created a 'Maps' section on the "Library" page, and while there added the 'Terraserver' satellite image database.  On the "Television Commercials" page, added the 'Cheese' website, along with 'Tyson Foods', 'Louis Kemp', 'Hasbro', Victoria's Secret', 'Land Rover', 'monster.com', and 'Budweiser'.
January 1, 1999:  Cleaned out and fixed dead links throughout the "Engineering" page and while there added links to online catalogs, catalog request forms, and some other  online goodies in the Hardware & Stuff section.  Cleaned up the links on the "Weather" page - for some reason weather related web information always seems to change locations...  Added local and national television news sites to the Daily News section of "FJL Today".  Added 'Summit Racing', another 'Columbia House' link, 'Elway Auto Nation', 'HUD', 'Carnival Cruises' and 'Rite Aid' to the "TV Commercials" page.  More enhancements to the "Spam Wars" pages as usual, see those pages for more on their updates. Tax Day is coming - you can get the not-so-common tax forms and help with them by clicking on the IRS icon on the front page.
October 27, 1998:  A project I worked on for three years named SWAS is finally being launched three years after being delivered to NASA.  The "SWAS" page had to have some updates, of course.  Added the 'Old Farmer"s Almanac' to the forecasts sections of both the local and national weather sections of the "Weather" page.  Added the Allenspark 'Elkstreet' webcam to "The Net" and to the "Weather" page.  Also on "The Net", most of the dead links have been cleaned out, and the sick ones (those whose addresses changed) were fixed, and a section on internet privacy has been created.  The Television Commercials section of the "Television" page was separated out into it's own page.  While there, three more sites were added, 'Mail Boxes Etc.', 'Tollhouse Cookies', and 'AutomallUSA'.
September 09, 1998:  On the "Television" page in the commercials section; added 'Ryder' moving trucks, 'M&M' candies, the 'Ireland' tourism site, 'Simple Green', 'Nike', 'Home Depot',  'Febreeze', 'Willy Wonka"s Candy Factory', 'Chef Boyardee', and 'Isuzu'.  Added a free encyclopedia to both the "Library" page, and the "Kidstuff" page - it's no Brittanica, but it IS free...  With all the talk about the Windows CIH virus lately, I've started a section about Computer Virii and Virus Hoaxes on the "More Computer Stuff" page.   Put 'The Answering Machine' (interesting messages to put on your machine for callers) on the "Oddstuff" page.  Added links to 'Watlow' and 'Minco', makers of electric heating element hardware, to the "Engineering Stuff" page, including links to the Watlow heat transfer reference section, and the Minco free software utilities.  Added the 'Dead People Server' to the "Oddstuff", "Library", and "Television" pages.  Added 'The Mechanical Universe', a physics telecourse from PBS to the "Kidstuff", and "Parents" teaching resources pages.  Finally, the 'Denver Sidewalk' has been added to the Entertainment section of "FJL Today".
August 02, 1998:   Mostly cosmetic changes for this update...  The columns of little green slow-loading Java Applet buttons on each page were replaced with simpler (and much smaller) pull down menus for moving around these web pages.  Also added a multi-search-engine interface to the bottom of the front page, which allows searching 1 to 4 search engines at once.  Since the Spam Wars pages are always being updated with new tools, etc., I've created their own update status banners on those pages.

June 08, 1998:  Repaired & added to the webcam links from KUSA in the Eye-berspace section of "The Net".  Added KUSA's webcams and a new webcam with a view of the Boulder's Pearl Street Mall to the "Weather" page.  Added the Broomfield news to the Local section of the online newspapers in "FJL Today".  Added 'Alamo Rent-A-Car', 'Great Clips', 'Mr. Reach', and 'Prilosec' to the Commercials section of the "Television" page.  Added two more of Consumer.net's traceroute servers to the "Spam Wars" page, and created a page with just the tools shown on that page, for anyone who's already familiar with how to use them and who doesn't want to read through the rather detailed instructions on how to trace a spammer.  Also added a search form to use Alta Vista's "host:" search capability, which can be used to obtain a list of all the pages on a web site without actually having to visit the site, to the "Spam Wars" pages.
April 19, 1998:  Added more search tools for tracing spammers who send stuff from Canada, and Europe & the surrounding area, to the "Spam Wars" page, along with more information about spotting and reporting fraudulent spam.  SpaceNews was removed from "FJL Today" after they decided to charge $$ for all their news, and was replaced with the 'Houston Chronicle Space Central'.  Also added 'The Onion' to "FJL Today".  Added more current weather conditions links from the Weather Underground for Broomfield, Boulder and several Colorado cities to the "Weather" page.  Added the 'ThamesCam' to the Eyeberspace section of "The Net".   Added 'Macmillan Publishing' and their online bookshelf to "The Library", and the "Kid Stuff" parents & teachers page.  Added the latest estimated launch date for SWAS to it's page.  Added several links about space science that were already on the "Space" page to the "Kidstuff" page.  Added the 'MIT Biology Hypertextbook' to the "Parents & Teachers" education page.  Added the 'Bottled Water Web' and the 'Cereal Mascot Conspiracy' to the "Off Center" page.  Added

March 08, 1998:  Added 'SpaceCast', Sky & Telescope's 'Sky Online' and RMN's 'Exploring Space' to the Space News section of "FJL Today".  Added another Boulder, CO webcam from Compatible Systems to both the "Weather" and Eye-berspace section of  "The Net" pages, and a link to the 'WebCam Webring', to the Eye-berspace section of "The Net".  Added a new section to the "Weather" page containing Extra Terrestrial weather and the Internet Weather Report.  Rearranged the Information About Materials section of the "Engineering" page again, seperating the metals from the non-metals from the general material information, and added links to 'The Aluminum Association', the 'American Iron and Steel Institute', the 'International Titanium Association', 'The Copper Page' and 'American Metal Market' to the new Materials Section.  Added the 'Handbook for Technical Project Engineers', the 'Rapid Prototyping Resource Center' to the Other Information section of the "Engineering" Page.  Also added a link to the freeware zip and unzip software 'Info-Zip' to both the "Engineering" and "More Computer Stuff" pages.  Added even more stuff to the Resources section of "Spam Wars".
February 08, 1998: Extensively revised the front page with a more compact java site map and added the 'Internet Traffic Report', and moved the original text site map to another page (for those few who don't run java).  Added new java navigation buttons to each major page.  Turned the 'Spam Wars' section of "The Net" into it's own page since it was getting so big and extensively revised it, adding new tools and sites for combatting spam (junk email).  Added 'Principle Metals' to the Information section of the "Engineering" page.  Added 'Children's Storybooks Online' to the "Kidstuff" page, added 'ZOCOR', 'Suretrade.com', 'Shuteye', 'Ragu', and 'Prilosec' to the Commercials section of the "Television" page.  "The Frederal Center" and the "Corporate Sites" pages have been moved to a new section called "Old Stuff", since I haven't been able to find anything new to put on them for over some time.
January 13, 1998: Overhauled the "Weird stuff" page to clear out the dead links, etc., and added a link to Manus' new game, 'Payola' along with a dozen or so more new odd items, including the 'Boulder Vegetable Rights Association', 'Bureau of Missing Socks', and the 'Early 80s Preservation Society', and moved the 'Lego' and 'Crayola' sites to the "Kidstuff" page.  Overhauled the "Kidstuff" page to break apart the various links according to subject, and added several links to each section, including the parent's page.  Expanded the 'Star Trek' section of the "Television" page to include some stuff about what Viacom is trying to do to websites carrying Star Trek information, and added two large sections about 'Babylon 5' and 'The Sci-Fi Channel'.
December 15, 1997//: Split the Information Sources portion of the "Engineering" page into two parts, one part focused on materials, the other on other stuff.  In the Information About Materials section, added the 'Slime page' to the list item for 'Polymers dot com', two sites with material outgassing information from NASA were added, along with a site containing Material Safety Data Sheets.  Also added in this section was a page I reconstructed (and improved upon, from another site) containing various engineering properties of some common (and not-so-common) engineering materials.  In the Information About Other Stuff section, added a site containing conversions from nearly any english measure to the SI units system.  On the "Television" page, added 'Avis', a Campbell's soup site, 'IMITREX', and one other.  The "FJL Today" page was overhauled to remove dead links and to add instant access icons for several of the comics in the Comics section, and links were added to get the freeware Sherman's Lagoon screen saver.  Added two search engine interfaces to the bottom of the front page, to 'Yahoo!' and 'HotBot', with more to come later.

Added the 'Kellogg's' site, with links to their 'Cocoa Frosted Flakes', 'Apple Jacks', 'Cornpops', 'Pop-Tarts', and 'Rice Krispies' cereal pages, along with  'Own-A-Car', 'Columbia' (sportswear), and 'Sylvan Learning Centers', to the Commercials section of the "Television" page. Updated the "Space" page, with a revised description of AXAF, and a newer artists rendering of SIRTF, and I was finally able to find a picture of CGRO to add to it's brief description.
October 12, 1997//: Added 'The Infomercial Index' just above the list of TV commercial web sites on the "Television" page. In the regular TV commercial section, added 'Quaker Oats', 'Weather Shield', 'Skytel', 'Cowtown' (from the beef council), 'Nestle' (chocolate), 'Bertolli' (olive oil), 'Bolla' (wines), 'Maaco', and 'Dockers'. Overhauled the "Weather" page, and added several more links to information that seems to round it out more.

After re-counting, there is approximately 125 different web sites collected from TV commercials in that section. Overhauled the "Engineering" page to repair dead links, and to reformat it a bit. Added Microsoft's engineering web page 'Start Magazine' to the CAD section of the "Engineering" page, and added 'Maxon Motors', 'BSA Ball screws', 'Southco', and 'Igus' companies to the Hardware and Stuff section of the "Engineering" page.
August 20, 1997//: I'm learning to use a new web page editor and have been simultaneously getting a 5 year-old ready for Kindergarten...  Updated my SWAS page, and my Pegasus XL page, both accessible from the "Space" page, which has been updated itself.  Also accessible from the "Space" page, is a new page I've created about the ZENO project - one of the first projects I worked on at Ball.  Added 'Kentucky Fried Chicken', 'Taco Bell', and 'Duracell' to the Commercials section of the "Television" page.
July 30, 1997//: Added all the sub-web sites that 'c|net' hosts to the "Computer Stuff" page. Added 'MovieLink' (where you can find out where & when movies are playing in the Denver area), to "FJL Today" in the More Entertainment section. On the "Weather" page, the images sent by EarthWatch Communications have been enlarged slightly, so that more detail can be seen. The "Space" page has been revised a bit to organize the information on it better, and to try out some new page layout techniques I've been reading about. Updated the SWAS launch date and added a little more information on the SWAS page (accessible from the "Space" page, in the Ball section). Discovered the name and company of one of the worst offenders of junk emailing, and added details about him to "The Net" page at the bottom of the Fighting Spam section.
July 04, 1997//: Added a bit more to the last step of fighting junk email to "The Net". Created a page that loads a picture of  9th and Pearl in Boulder, CO that provides the time you loaded it, and then reload's itself every five minutes, the same as the frequency of the picture from Boulder. The 9th and Pearl page is accessible from the "Weather" page, in the Colorado section. On the "Television" (and radio) page, added 'The Peak (96.5)' to the Radio section. Added 'Geico' and 'Bud Ice' (penguins) to the "Television" page.

May 12, 1997//: The number of links to different Television Commercial web sites on my "Television" page now exceeds 100 with the addition of 'General Motors', 'Ford', and 'Chrysler' and their subdivisions that have displayed web addresses in TV commercials, along with 'Equal' (the fake sugar stuff), 'Lifesavers' (the real sugar stuff), 'John Elway' (car dealerships page), 'Old Spice', another 'US West Yellow Pages' site, 'FTD' (the flower people), 'Subway', 'Revlon', 'Sears' 'Mastercard', 'Toro', 'Owens Corning', 'Nissan' 'Metlife', 'Gatorade', 'Sprint' and 'DirecTV'. The 'Owens Corning Glass Fiber Composites' site turned out to be a good resource to add to the Information Sources section of the "Engineering" page.
April 26, 1997//: Took a little time off from publishing to do my taxes, recover from a disk drive crash, etc., but still managed to do the following: Added a link to a 'CAGE code' lookup service provided by the Defense Department to the "Engineering" page (with a link to it's related FAQ for those who don't know what a CAGE code is). Added 32 (more or less) new webcam sites to the Webcams (Eye-berspace) section of "The Net" including several Denver and Boulder views, three from California, four from NASA, one from Finland, two from Paris, and one from London.
April 02, 1997//: Now that heavy coverage of the Oklahoma City bombing trial has started, the news section of "FJL Today" has expanded considerably with the addition of national news carriers 'CNN Interactive', the 'New York Times', the 'Los Angeles Times', the 'Washington Post', the 'London Times', 'MSNBC' and 'Infoseek' in the Full News Coverage portion of the News table, which now spans two rows. Also, a Local News row was added to the News table with links to the 'Denver Post', the 'Rocky Mountain News' and the 'Boulder Daily Camera'. On the Engineering page, added the 'Mechanical Analysis Home Page' to the Information section; and 'Deltron Precision, Inc' and the 'Motion Control Home Page' to the Hardware section.

February 21, 1997//: The second Hubble servicing mission was a success, and the front page has been returned to normal, except for the new clock which is visible to Java enabled browsers. The links to the 'NASA webcams', and to the 'Countdown/Mission' page were added to the "Space" page, and the 'Daily Shuttle Status Reports' have been added to the "FJL Today" page in the Space News section. More information about one particular Hubble photo of the EGG clusters of the Eagle Nebula and how it's been used in both a Star Trek movie and in an episode of Babylon 5 were added to the Hubble section of the "Space" page.
February 01, 1997//: Added links to the front page and the "Space" page for space shuttle mission STS-82, the Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission #2, during which two Ball Aerospace instruments named NICMOS and STIS are to be installed. For those with Java enabled browsers, a countdown clock which turns into a mission duration clock, was added to the front page. The clock can be detached from the web page by holding the mouse pointer over it, clicking on it, and then while keeping the pointer over it, hitting any key (spacebar seems to work best). Do the same over the detached window to close it.
