My initial introduction to calligraphy was in March, 1983 when
Mom and I enrolled in an non-credit evening course at the University of Tennessee. Since she was a senior (over
60 years old), she was admitted free based on available space. We attended a three-hour course every Thursday
evening for 6 weeks in the Glocker Business Building on the Knoxville campus.
I would pick her up, we'd grab a bite to eat before class and on
more than one occasion, she slept right through our class. She'd worked hard on those particular days and was simply
worn out by the time we arrived at class. Pretty much the same routine I'd some ten years earlier in
the same building! Nevertheless, she learned calligraphy as I did. She asked me on more than one occasion if I'd
attended class in the very classroom where we sat each Thursday evening. Yes, I told her I had. She seemed geniunely
pleased that we were there together.
During our last evening at U.T., she called an example of my
calligraphy to the attention of the entire class. She said she thought her daughter's calligraphy was "just beautiful."
That's a Mom for you! I loved sharing that time with her.
