In Memory of Ed Wright....
A good man and friend, Ed Wright, passed away this week (November 23, 2009) at his
home in Jensen Beach, Florida.
Ed loved his family, friends and he loved hiking to Mt. LeConte in the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park. He'd hiked to Mt. LeConte more than a thousand times. He was knowledgeable about
the Smokies and very willing to help, share information with and inspire countless hikers he met and numerous hikers
he never met.
I was honored to be invited to hike with Ed on October 27, 2007 with his son Bob,
his daughter-in-law Lisa, and their two sons, Charlie and Austin on Ed's 1,305th ascent to Mt. LeConte. Many of Ed's
frends accompanied him on this trek to Mt. LeConte and I counted myself lucky to be in the company of such a fine
and fun group of people.
Al and I sat in our car the morning of the scheduled hike, looking around for Ed
and a group of hikers who would accompany him this day. Well, the group came and went and once we realized we were the
only people left in the parking lot, we donned our headlamps and quickly began making our way on the Alum Cave Bluff
trail. It was still dark and we didn't catch up to any of his group for about 45 minutes. You can bet we didn't
fall behind from that point on. We hiked, chatted, laughed, ate each other's snacks and generally had a good day hiking
with this good-natured group of people. All of us were happy to be with Ed Wright on his trek to Mt. LeConte.
