This morning I was listening to CSPAN take phone calls on the subject of cars being stopped in Detroit and if this violates civil rights. No longer can I sit quietly by and listen to the kind of pap being spouted about civil liberties and the evils of "profiling." Is is abominable that this is even a question to be asked. Wake up, America! We are in war times and our security is at stake. National security is not merely a "buzz word." If September 11th didn't serve to wake us up to the very real threat that is living right in the heart of this nation, what will it take?
What is a few minutes of inconvenience while we stop our car to show our identification? This is supposed to be too great a price to pay for national security? The great generation of our fathers and grandfathers would have laughed in our faces over the notion; they who put their lives on the line to fight against evil. When we should be rallying and making any possible contribution to the effort to fight terrorism within our own borders, I'm listening to mealy-mouth whining about civil rights and how unfair it is to profile those with the appearance of Eastern descent. The only problem I see with profiling is that we might miss the terrorist with blonde hair and/or blue eyes.
After September 11th, many citizens from all over this nation swarmed to give blood, donate money or make any effort at all to contribute to the cause. Don't let that battle cry be drowned out. In our frustration at feeling useless because we couldn't each be personally present at ground zero lifting rocks, we searched for some way to help. You can help now. If you are stopped in your car; be happy and grateful that your security is being protected. If you are searched at the airport, be confident in knowing you will have a safer flight for the vigilance of security personnel.
In time of threat to our national security, all bets are off folks. I, for one, will gladly sacrifice a few minutes of my time to aid in our country's attempts to secure our borders and identify those who already live among us that would do us harm. This is not a violation of our civil rights; it is a protection of those rights. If our country is not kept safe, how can we follow the pursuit of happiness?
