My name is William J Sparks, I served from 1985-1991. I was at MCAS El Torro for 5 years. Then in dessert storm served on a little known island called Ie Shima. I was the Asst. Fire Chief at the time and the second group of USMC personnel to serve there. We took it over from the Air Force because of its remote area of operations. Thus the name OSD Ie Shima. As far as I know we still have Marine's there. While I was there we only had 3 CFR personnel and 2 locals. The total number of Marines was only 12 with the OIC and the NCOIC. We had a 3000 ft. Runway that was made out of crushed coral that would land C-130's. While Dessert Storm was going on we were the brief sight for the Green Berets A teams that were leaving for Kuwait. Anyway not many people know of this area and thought it would be good info you might be able to use. If I can help in any way just E-Mail me at FireMed216@AOL.com. Currently I am a firefighter/paramedic with Nederland TX. Local 3339/

: Donald C. Staver Former Marine Crash-Crewman 1972-1976, Hotspot was not one of my favorite things when pulling duty. Sitting in bunker gear in an old MB-5 in the hot summer sun wasn't one of the things taught to us at crash school at NAS Memphis. But I still look back at those years with fond memories. Keep up the good work. Semper Fi
