Shot of the Shepherd creek sand pit looking westerly towards Hwy 395. Notice Mt. Williamson
in the background. Mt. Williamson is the 2nd highest peak in the contiguous United States just a 120' feet short of Mt. Whitney.
Shepherd creek is the one of nearby creeks that is in close promimity to Manzanar. It is also the primary water source
for the camp. This creek was a very popular creek for the internees to fish because it was a very pure water source and
a perfect habitat for thousands of rainbow trout. Even during the time of the Japanese evacuation, the Mount Whitney hatchery
stock thousands and thousands of trout through out the creeks that surround Manzanar. There have also been a few rugged souls
that climbed over Shepherd pass 12,000' peak in the upper Kern drainage to go after the elusive California State fish....the
"golden trout".
