Turner Rice, in his article on the Cypress Land Company, stated that the company decided to take advantage of the Land Relief Acts and returned a portion of their original acreage and received debt reduction of 37 percent. In return, the Cypress Land Company was required to reduce the debts of purchasers of town lots by 20 percent.
Also in 1821, General Coffee moved the Federal Land Office from Huntsville to Florence and the first steamboat, Osage, arrived at Florence. In addition, the renowned traveler Anne Royall visited Florence and described a boomtown. By all appearances, the panic was over.
According to the Articles of Association of the Cypress Land Company, the trustees were to hold a final land sale within five years.
After it was widely publicized, the 1823 sale attracted a small crowd and sold $58,000 in lots. By the end of 1823, a total of $324,000 in lots had been sold.
At this second sale, the trustees sold the tavern known as the Florence Hotel to James Jackson's brother John. Also sold were lots for the jail, college and female seminary. Not sold were the blocks listed as the public walk, what is now Wilson Park, and the cemetery.

Lauderdale County Born

Lauderdale County had been one of the original 13 counties created by the Territorial Legislature in February 1818. The namesake for Lauderdale was col. James Lauderdale of Sumner county, Tenn. Lauderdale served in Gen. Andrew Jackson's Army directly under Gen. John Coffee was wounded at the battle of Talladega and died as a result of his wounds on Dec.23, 1814.
Within a month after the county was created, March 12, 1818, a land company was formed in Huntsville in the Federal Land Office of John Coffee, surveyor general of the north Alabama District. The Cypress Land Company was a merger of two competing companies, the Tennessee Land Company and the Alabama Company.
This merger eliminated some of the competition and allowed them to pool resources. The Articles of Association appointed seven trustees: Leroy Pope, Thomas Bibb and John McKinley of the Alabama Company and John Coffee, James Jackson, John Childress and Dabney Morris of the Tennessee Land Company.
The Cypress Land Company purchased 5,515.77 acres from the United States for $85,235.24, for an average of $15.50 per acre.
The Federal Land Act of 1800 required one-fourth of the purchase price to be paid as a down payment and the remainder paid within three years. To raise the necessary down payment of $21,308.81 the trustees of the Cypress Land Company chose to sell 408 shares of stock at $52.23 per share.
In the summer of 1818, Coffee supervised the surveying of the town site of Florence. Assisting Coffee were Ferdinand Sannoner, James Weakley and Hunter Peale. Blocks in town were laid out in squares of almost two acres and divided into four equal lots.
Months before the first land sale, the trustees began a newspaper advertising campaign.
Potential buyers were assured of a tremendous opportunity to invest in a town that was to become one of the largest commercial cities in the Southwest.
The advertisements touted excellent land, abundant timber, the existence of raw materials such as iron and stone coal, and a mild climate.
Future transportation was promised in the form of steamboats as well as Jackson's Military Road to connect Nashville and New Orleans. The company further advertised that Jackson had proposed to the War Department that a military armory supply depot and cannon factory be constructed locally.
Irish immigrant prospers

James Jackson was born in Ireland, educated as a civil engineer and came to America in 1799.
In 1800, he moved to the frontier of Tennessee and settled in Nashville. In 1804, he opened Jackson's General Merchandise and was on his way to becoming a respected and prominent businessman.
In 1810 he married the beautiful widow, Sarah "Sally" Moore McCulloch of the Carolina Moores. Sarah's great-grandfather, James Moore, was a royal governor of Carolina. Her grandfather, Roger, commonly known as "King Roger" founded the famous Orton Plantation on the Cape Fear River near Wilmington.
Sarah's first husband, Samuel McCulloch drowned while on a land-buying trip. Jackson and his bride prospered in Nashville, raising four of their nine children there.
James Jackson moved his family to Lauderdale County in 1821 when his large, Greek temple-style home, the Forks of Cypress, was completed.
From 1822 he was active in state politics and eventually served in both houses of the Alabama Legislature. In 1839, Jackson was named president of the state Senate.
Once a political adviser to Andrew Jackson, James Jackson and the future president split over personal business and James Jackson became a leader in the Whig Party in Alabama.
James Jackson was renowned as a sportsman and breeder of thoroughbred horses. The horses from the Forks of Cypress are nationally recognized as bloodstock for the famous Kentucky thoroughbreds.
When Jackson died in 1840 at the age of 58, he was regarded as the richest man in Alabama

The dreams of the founders of both the canal and railroad were soon dashed by the Panic of 1837. In addition to the canal's weaknesses, the panic resulted in decreased river traffic and forced the TCD Railroad Company into bankruptcy.

The Panic of 1837 was a direct result of Andrew Jackson's veto of the re-charter of the National Bank in 1832 and his personal and political warfare against Henry Clay, Daniel Webster and John C. Calhoun. The long-reaching effects spelled doom for both the canal and railroad

Her obituary was published in the Florence Gazette, December 27, 1879.
Died at her residence, ?The Forks of Cypress,? at 8 o?clock on the morning of the 24th instant, Mrs. Sarah M Jackson

Mrs. Jackson was the daughter of Mr. George Moore of orange County, North Carolina, and was born near Wilmington, on the 10th day of July, 1790. Her girlhood was spent with her guardian, Mr Duncan Cameron, of Raleigh. She was married to Mr. Samuel McCulloch, and moved to Tennessee in 1808. Her second marriage was to Mr. James Jackson on the 28th of December 1810, and he settled ?The Forks of Cypress? in this county in 1820. Whch place was bought from noted Indian, Chief ?Doublehead?.

From these facts it will be seen that Mrs. Jackson resided in this county nearly 60 years, and during that long period, held the most perfect respect and esteem of all her acquaintances and was never heard to speak disparagingly of anyone but ever espoused the causes of the weak and defenseless. A member of the Presbyterian Church, she was a devoted Christian and possessed a faith which enabled her to meet calmly, all the afflictions which were allotted her in her long and useful life. Almost all her life was spent in affluent circumstances, and it was ever her pleasure to relive suffering of those were under her notice. A modest, pure Christian woman, she was eminently endowed with that faith that suffereth long and is patient.??

Wilson and Matthew Wilson.

Jackson's defense

In 1864, Shoals residents saw less military activity than the previous years.
McDonald wrote an account of Col. James Jackson Jr.'s April raid from Franklin into Lauderdale County in an attempt to end the raiding and plundering of the infamous 9th Ohio Cavalry.
The white steeds of that group, 150 strong, gave them the name, "White Horse Cavalry."
Finding the enemy camped on the Peters plantation, Jackson's volunteers from the 27th Alabama Infantry routed them, killing two, taking 42 prisoners, and capturing livestock and food stolen from local residents.
Jackson's men returned into Franklin but ironically, two Ohio Cavalry members escaped to Florence and the Federals evacuated the city, fearing a large invasion force.

He owned an iron furnace on the river in Tennessee and a
plantation in Mississippi. His real estate holdings were valued at
$80,000 in 1850. He was a breeder of race horses and closely
associated with his uncle James Jackson, whose step daughter Elizabeth
McCullough he married. He had five sons to serve in the Confederate
Army.

Thomas Kirkman (1800-1864) was a wealthy merchant in Florence, Lauderdale County, who wrote two anonymously published stories of Old Southwest humor that were read appreciatively throughout the United States and later abroad: "Jones's Fight" and "A Quarter Race in Kentucky."

Born in 1800 in Ireland of Scots-Irish ancestry, Thomas Kirkman came with his father Thomas to Nashville, Tennessee, where the father invested in land and established a regionally successful wholesale mercantile business. Thomas Kirkman Jr. moved to Florence in 1821 and thrived as a merchant there for 40 years. He invested in a Tennessee iron furnace, a Mississippi plantation, and locally in the Forks of Cypress stables, which bred and trained imported race horses. In the 1820s, 1830s, and 1840s, some of the most famous race horses in the country were owned by Kirkman's family, including Leviathan, Glencoe, and especially Peytona, which captured a much-touted win at New York's Union Race Course in 1845.

Kirkman and his wife Elizabeth McCullough Kirkman were the parents of five sons who lived to manhood, four of whom served in the Confederate Army. Their son Samuel, born in 1832, became one of the youngest graduates of Harvard University and gained a reputation as a businessman and "expert cotton crop statistician." Although many Kirkmans made their homes in Alabama, the family burial place for generation after generation remained Nashville.

Even though, in the opinion of influential Spirit of the Times editor William Trotter Porter, "Jones's Fight" was a fine piece of writing, it was in no way comparable to "A Quarter Race in Kentucky." The former sketch details attempts of the conceited, defeated Colonel Dick Jones to salvage his reputation after fighting Bill Patterson, who, Jones claimed, had slandered him. In the tale, Jones claims that he stopped the fight to keep the crowd from getting bored, not because he was being badly beaten.

"A Quarter Race" is an account of that title event by an earnest, curious, naive narrator, a figure that was a staple of Old Southwest humor. This story was lauded by W. T. Porter as one of the finest stories of the genre ever penned. Kirkman went to great lengths to protect his identity, such as having his stories copied in another hand and mailing them 500 miles from Alabama before they were mailed again for publication submission. Kirkman died in 1864 and is buried in Nashville.

162 M    ix. Alexander Jackson Kirkman 117 was born in 1842 and died on 10 May 1901 at age 59.

General Notes: One of the most fascinating rebel Kirkmans was First Lieutenant Alexander Jackson Kirkman of the 4th Alabama Cavalry who was attending Heidelberg University in Germany when the war erupted. Alex returned home on a blockade runner, joined the 4th Alabama, apparently escaped the mass surrender at Fort Donelson, TN (1862) and participated in the battles of Shiloh, TN (1862) and Chickamauga, GA (1863). Alex was captured during a daring raid on Florence, AL (which may have been his home town) on Oct. 30, 1863 and imprisoned in Fort Delaware.
During the summer of 1864, Alex became a victim of one of war’s most asinine stupidities. In August, the Confederate commander at Charleston, SC ordered 600 Union prisoners to be held in an area of the city that was being bombarded by Yankee cannon fire. In angry retaliation, the Yankees transferred 600 Confederate officers from Fort Delaware to a mosquito-infested island near Charleston and housed them in a rude stockade that was being harried by rebel artillery. Alex was one of the unfortunate 600 who had to dodge their fellow Confederates’ gunfire.

Alex and his comrades were guarded by the famous 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the blacks who gained fame when they attempted to storm Battery Wagner in the summer of 1863, an event documented in the movie "Glory." The 54th’s blacks did not treat the 600 with kid gloves.

The 600's idiotic exposure to Confederate fire continued for 45 days until the rebels transferred their prisoners out of Charleston and the Yankees sent their prisoners to Ft. Pulaski, GA and Hilton Head, SC. Alex and other survivors of the 600 were returned to Fort Delaware in March 1865. After the Confederacy collapsed, Alex and his fellow prisoners were required to take the oath of allegiance before they were freed in June 1865.

Alex and the others who endured the Charleston atrocity later were called "The Immortal 600," but there wasn’t anything immortal about their disgraceful treatment. Family members who want to learn more about the miserable imprisonment of Alex and the 600 should read the book "Captives Immortal" by Mauriel Phillips Joslyn.

Mary married General Richard Keith Call,118 son of Captain William Call and Helen Mead Walker, on 15 Jul 1824 in Nashville, Tenn. General was born on 24 Oct 1792 in Pittsfield, Prince William C, VA and died on 14 Sep 1862 in The Grove, Tallahassee, FL at age 69.

(March 19, 1841)of Florida. The son of Captain William and Helen
Meade (Walker) Call and the namesake nephew of Major Richard Keith
Call, a Revolutionary War hero. Young Call left Mount Pleasant
Academy, near Clarksville, Tennassee in 1813 for the Creek War in
which his conduct endeared him to General Andrew Jackson, whose
personal aide he was thereafter. He first came to Florida in 1814
with Jackson as a soldier and returned with him to Pensacola in 1821
to set up the American Government for the new Territory. In 1822 he
decided to make Florida his civilian home, first as a lawyer in
Pensacola. Successively he was a member of the Legislative Council,
delegate to Congress, receiver of the West Florida Land Office,
brigadier general of the West Florida mulitia and territorial
Governor, he routed the Indians in the second and third battles of
Wahoo Swamp. He was removed as Governor because of a controversy with federal authorities of help for Florida in the Indian conflict.
Although a democrat, he canvassed in the North for the Whig
candidate, William Henry Harrison, who subsequently appointed him to
his old place of Governor. When Florida became a seate in 1845, he
was a candicate for Gouvernor but was defeated, largely because of his
part in the election of Harrison. He was married in General Jackson's
home, the "Hermitage" to Mary Letitia Kirkman of Nashville. Call's
home in Tallahassee, "The Grove" built in the 1830's remains today a
place of architectural and historic distinction.

131. James Kirkman Jackson 13,94 was born on 7 Apr 1862 in Lauderdale, Florence, Ala and died on 8 Jul 1921 in Birmingham, Alabama, USA13 at age 59.

General Notes: JAMES KIRKMAN JACKSON was Born at Florence, Ala., April 1, 1862. He
WAS educated at the State Normal callow located in his native place.
He began his business life in a large railroad office, and learned
there much of the admirable dispatch and method that has made him
possibly tube finest private secretary to a governor in the country.
In March, 1883, he was elected CLERK of the state railroad commission
and might have continued indefinitely in the place. such were his
qualifications, but in December, 1886, he was solicited by Gov. Seay,
the newly elected governor of the state. to take the position Of
private secretary. The Montgomery Advertiser had to say, on the
accession of this appointment, something that expressed a common
opinion at the time. It said: "When Gov. Sean came into office last
December, he immediately began to cast about for a private secretary.
This is a high and responsible office. The incumbent is the confidant
of the governor and must be trustworthy. The duties are confidential
and require fidelity. They are complicated and difficult, and require
intelligence. The incumbent must meet and receive at the capitol of
the state the people of the state. and his address and manners must
uphold the dignity of the taught. He must also be a, democrat. The
governor found Mr. Jackson up to the full measure of every requirement
and appointed him to this responsible office. never before filled by
so young 3 man. It is only necessary to add that the governor has
found his private secretary all that he hoped, a priceless
acquisition." Mr. Jackson fully deserved these Cordial words of
commendation, and when Gov. Jones succeeded Gov. Seay in 1890. he
retained Mr. Jackson as his private secretary, a place he still holds.
Mr. Jackson comes of a family of sterling qualities in every respect,
and is himself a general favorite wherever he is known.

James Kirkman Jackson, businessman, was born April 7, 1862, at Florence; son of James and Elizabeth (Perkins) Jackson, of Florence, the former who was colonel of the Twenty-seventh Alabama Infantry regiment, C.S. Army; grandson of William O. and Pocahontas Bolling (Meredith) Perkins, of Lauderdale County; great-grandson of Elisha and Sarah Bolling (Cabell) Meredith of Prince William County, Va., the latter whose grandfather was a colonel in the Revolutionary Army; and a descendant of James and Sarah (Moore) Jackson, the former a native of Ballabay, County Monaghan, Ireland, and one of the pioneers and founders of Florence, the latter a lineal descendant of Sir John Yeamans and James Moore, colonial governors of Carolina.

Mr. Jackson received his early schooling under a private tutor in Florence, and attended the State normal school, at that place. He was admitted to the bar, but never engaged in the practice of law. In 1883, he was appointed clerk of the Alabama Railroad Commission, and held that position for four years; served as private secretary to Gov. Thomas Seay, 1887-1890; to Gov. Thomas G. Jones, 1890-1894; and to Gov. Jelks, 1902-1907; serving the last three months of that time under Gov. Comer; was elected Secretary of State, 1894-1898.

He was a Democrat and an Episcopalian. Married: February 21, 1900, at Montgomery, to Helen Gunter, daughter of William A. and Helen (Poelnitz) Gunter, of Marengo County. Children: 1. James Kirkman, jr.; 2. Helen. Residence: Birmingham.

General Notes: Samuel Kirkman was born at Florence, Alabama in 1832 and was
educated at the common schools, primarily, graduating from Harvard
University (1850) when eighteen years of age, the youngest man to
enter the senior class from common schools. Leaving Harvard, he
returned to Florence and clerked in the store of his father two years;
going thence to St. Louis, where he established a commission house,
under the style and firm name of Kirkman and Lake. At the end of
eight years he returned to Florence, and at Tuscumbia, in 1861, he
invested $20,000 in a cotton factory. It was destroyed in 1865 by
Wilson's Cavalry, and with it 700 bales of cotton. For the succeeding
six or seven years he purchased cotton at Florence for eastern
dealers, and discovered thereat such facility that he was employed
regularly thereafter by one of the largest cotton houses in the United
States as an expert cotton crop statistician, the only many employd in
such specialty in the United States.
Samuel Kirkman was probably one of the youngest men that ever
graduated from Harvard and is today regarded as one of the shrewdest
business men in Northern Alabama.
He was married at Nashville, Tenn in 1858 to a daugher of Mr
James Woods. She died in 1865 leaving two daughters, the eldest now
the accomplished wife of Mr Emmett O'Neal a brilliant young attornes
at Florence.
Mr Kirkman has been for fifteen years a director in the Female
Synodical College of Florence.

Ellen married Medicus A Long 180 in 1845.

General Notes: Medicus A Long was a member of George Walker's Law Firm, Walker
and Governor Call were cousins.
He remains a shadowy figure. He agreed to acto for Ellen and her
minor sister Mary Call in trying to recover their mother's share of
their grandfather Kirkman's estate. Thomas Kirkman had left an estate
valued at $200,000 when he died in 1826, with his wife Ellen named as
executrix, but no accounting had ever been made. This was a delicate
family matter, since Mrs Kirkman had assumed the responsibility of
rearing both her grandaughers after their mother's death, even though
their father contributed to their support and Education. Little Mary
was still living with her grandmother, though Medicus and Ellen wanted
to have her with them. Medicus Long, whgo designated himself as "a
Lawyer and a gentleman," was "acting in both capacities" for his wife
and sister-in-law. The Kirkman family settled the matter with the
Longs in 1849, and with Governor Call for Mary in 1850.
Call supported first the Whigs and the new American Party.
During the campaign of 1856 Medicus Long and George W Call actually
met Richard Keith Call in public debate. In that same year Medicus
Long was named as a presidential elector by the state democratic
convention. No written evidence has survived to indicate that this
difference in political philosophy ever caused any family
difficulties. Hearsay evidence says he went to Texas for his Asthma.
He had been critically ill in 1849 and again in 1857, so he may well
have left Florida because of his health. But there was a definate
separation, since Ellen and the children remained in Florida with her
father.(Herbert J Doherty Jr "Richard Keith Call, Southern Unionist"

Mary married Theodore Washington Brevard.182 Theodore was born on 26 Aug 1835 in Tuskegee AL and died on 20 Jun 1882 in Tallahassee, FL at age 46.

General Notes: Theodore Washington Brevard was a descended from a Huguenot
family that came to this country upon the revocation of the Edict of
Nantes. His ancestors having taken a prominent part in the
establishment of American Independance, it is not strange that his
sword should have been one of the first drawn in the defence of
Southern rights. He was a great nephew of Dr Ephraim Brevard, author
of the Mecklenberg Declaration of Independance, and thorally inbued
with the principles of that first proclamation of freedom in the new
world. His parents were Caroline Mays of Edgefield, South Carolina,
and Judge Theodore Brevard who was for a number of years conptroller
of finances in the State of Florida. He was born at Tuskegee,
Alabama, August 26, 1835, and removed with his parents to Florida in
1847. His early education was received from Judge Hilton, so well
known to Floridians, who lived in Judge Brevard's family as tutor to
his sons for several years; this immediate preparation for college
being made in Charleston. He entered Mercer College, Georgia, and
after his course there studied at the University of Virginia. Even in
those early years he gave evidence of the powers of eloquence that
afterwards distinguished him. He studied Law and in 1858 was admitted
to the bar in Tallahassee.
the family of Brevards who were prominent in the development of North
Carolina during the Colonial Period. The father had practiced law
first in Charleston, South Carolina, then moved to Alabama in 1833
where he became a distinguished Judge. Son Theodore was born in
Alabama, but the family moved to Florida in 1847 and settled in
Tallahassee. The father became comptroller of Florida and made an
outstanding twelve year record in this office. Brevard County was
named after him.
Son Theodore went to school at Mercer College in George, then was
graduated in Law from the University of Virginia. He began his
practice in Tallahassee where he and his wife Mary Call raised a
family. He was an exceptionally able lawyer-soldier during the civil
war, advancing to the rank of brigadier general. He was captured by
Union forces three days before Lee's surrender and spent five months
in prison before returning to Tallahassee to resume his life with his
family and his legal career. General Brevard was elected to represent
Leon County in the state senate soon after his return. He died of an
aparent heart attack at age 47 in 1882. (Collins FC)

General Notes: Caroline Mays, who never married, but became the state's first
truly competent historian. She authored a "History of Florida" which
was the standard textbook used in the schools covering this subject
for many decades. She was recognized as a distinguished teacher of
Florida State College for Women subsequently FSU). A prominent
elementary school of Tallahassee was named in her honor and the first
local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution bears her
name. (Collins FC 191)

188. Gov John Anthony Winston 139 was born on 4 Sep 1812 in Madison Co and died on 21 Dec 1871 at age 59.

General Notes: WINSTON, JOHN ANTHONY, planter, business man, legislator, soldier and
governor of Alabama, was born September 4, 1812, in Madison County,
and died December 21, 1871, in Mobile; son of William and Mary Bacon
(Cooper) Winston; grandson of Anthony Winston (q. v ). He was educated
In the schools of the day at LaGrange college; and Nashvllle
university, Tenn. In 1835 he engaged in planting in Sumter County,
where he bought a large plantation and placed his slaves. He was
elected to the house of representatives 1840 and 1842, and by his
frankness and Independence became a leader. In 1844 he became a member
of the cotton commission house of John A. Winston and company, in
Mobile, and continued in that business until 1871. In 1845 he was
elected to the State senate, and was twice elected president of that
body. He organized a company for service in the Mexican War in 1846,
but did not see active service. In 1848 he was a delegate-at-large
from Alahama to the Baltimore convention. The legislature of Alabama
in 1849, sent him to Nashville where he took a firm stand against the
proposed compromise in regard to Southern rights. He returned to the
State senate In 1851, and became the leader of the Southern rights
Democrats. In 1862 as an elector at large, he supported Franklin
Pierce. He was elected governor of Alabama in 1853, the first native
born Alabamian to full that office, and in 1855, was re-elected over
Hon. G. D. Shortridge,'by 12,000 majority. He was bitterly opposed to
the granting of fsavors to railroads, or to the expenditure of money,
as long as the state was in debt. During his administration over
thirty measures were vetoed, for which reason he has been called the
"Veto Governor." On February 15 1854, he approved the act which
established a public school system in the state. In spite of his
conflicts with the legislature he was very popular, and in 1858, the
name of Hancock County, was changed to Winston In his honor. He was a
delegate-at-large to the Charleston convention, 1860, and headed the
Douglas ticket. In 1861 he was sent as a commissioner to Louisiana.
Upon the outbreak of hostilities between the Union and the Seceding
States he offered his services, and was appointed colonel of the 8th
Alabama infantry regiment, C.S Army. He commanded this regiment in the
Peninsular campaign, and was in several other battles. At the battle
of Seven Pines, when called on by the enemy to surrender, he replied
that he "didn't join the army to surrender," that was "not his
business there." Shortly afterward rheumatism and bronchitis forced
him to resign from military duty and he returned to his plantation,
giving all possible aid to the Confederate cause through counsel and
financial aid. At the close of the war, he was elected to the
Constitutional convention, of 1865, over Judge Dillard, and in 1867,
was chosen as a U. S. senator over Gen. George S. Houston, but as he
would not take the oath of allegiance to the Federat government, he
was not allowed to take his seat, and soon afterward was
disfranchised. In 1871 after a protracted illness, he died at his home
in Mobile. Brewer said of him, p. 531, "Gov. Winston was in person
tall and thin, and in his manhood's Day was erect, active and sinewy.
Energy, firmness, boldness, honesty, and common sense were his marked
characteristics. As a soldier he was a stern disciplinarian, and not
popular. But with men of all classes in the State he was a favorite,
and no man ever held the confidence of the people in greater measure."

General Notes: That kind of camaraderie was apparent on opening day of the Fairfield Bocce League in mid-May.

''We're sort of like one big family here, even though everyone comes from totally different backgrounds,'' Lee Hegley, the league's president, said while walking among the eight bocce courts that have been built at Veterans Park since the league was formed 30 years ago.

''See that kid over there?'' said Michael Gerda, a 58-year-old player, while pointing to a teenager in a red cap who was single-handedly annihilating his opponents. ''He's been coming to these games since he was a baby; I used to bounce him on my knee.''

The young man, Justin Tyrrell, 19, said he learned the sport from his Italian grandfather. Now he and his parents play together in the Monday night league.

''It's very relaxing,'' he said. ''It's a lot of fun.''

There are 15 teams in the Fairfield league, each with four to six players. Each team pays an annual fee of $150 to go toward an end-of-the-season banquet in September. (The banquet fund is also fortified by the losers; every time a team is defeated, each player pitches in $1.)

''The banquet is really something; you've never seen so much polyester and sequins in your life,'' said Kirkman Jackson, a vice president for UBS Paine Webber, who plays for a team called the Blue Marlins.

He said it was strange that he wound up such a bocce buff, since he is from Alabama, ''where they think bocce is a vegetable.''

pioneer in that movement which resulted in congressional legislation
on the subject. In 1912 Gov O'Neal was chairman of the Alabama

former Mattie Brandon. LeRoy Collins was graduated from Tallahassee's
Leon High School, attended the Eastman School of Business at

University. He was married in 1932 to Mary Call Darby, a
great-granddaughter of Richard Keith Call, twice Territorial Governor
of Florida. Governor and Mrs. Collins raised their four children in
the Call family home, "The Grove," which was acquired by them in 1941,
and is located across the street north of the official Governor's
Mansion in Tallahassee. He was elected at 25 as Leon County
Representative in the Legislature, and reelected in 1936 and 1938. He
was elected to the Senate in 1940 to complete an unexpired term,
reelected in 1942, resigned to serve in the Navy during World War II,
reelected in 1946 and again in 1950. He was the first Governor to be
elected for consecutive terms. He was first elected in 1954 to
complete the two remaining years of the term of the late Governor Dan
McCarty and reelected in 1956 for a regular four-year term. He also
made political history in 1956 by being the first Florida Governor to
win a first primary victory, defeating five opponents. Governor
Collins was the first American Governor to serve simultaneously as
chairman of the Southern Governors' Conference and the National

His prime interest was education, and he worked to strengthen and
modernize Florida's school system from the grade schools through the
universities. He sponsored educational television, nuclear science, a
broad community college program and university expansion and
improvement. In the racial unrest of his time he took a moderate
course counseling progress under law, and the state experienced only
minimal disorder. He served two terms as chairman of the Southern
Regional Education Board. Upon completion of six years as Governor, he
became president of the National Association of Broadcasters. He
resigned this at the request of President Lyndon B. Johnson to become
the first Director of the Community Relations Service under the 1964
Civil Rights Act. Also by Presidential appointment, he became Under
Secretary of Commerce on July 7, 1965. He resigned this position
effective October 1, 1966 to return to Florida and become a partner in
a Tampa law firm. He was successful in obtaining the Democratic
nomination for the U.S. Senate in the primary elections of 1968 but
was defeated in the general election. In early 1969 he resigned from
the Tampa firm and after business associations for one year which
