Susan Fancher is known for her deep and poetic musical interpretations.
A much sought after performer of new music, she has inspired and premiered dozens of new works for saxophone.
The 2011-2012 concert season features performances and
recording sessions for a CD of music by Hilary Tann, as well as a performance of Tann's Shakkei for soprano saxophone
and orchestra at the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial National Conference. Susan Fancher will also perform
the premiere of Concerto for soprano saxophone and orchestra by Mark Engebretson (written with the support of
a North Carolina Artist Fellowship) in Sao Paulo, Brazil, under the baton of Ligia Amadio. The season also includes
performances of Michael Torke's Concerto for soprano saxophone in its new version, commissioned by Susan
Fancher together with a consortium of wind ensembles, as well as Mark Engebretson's Duo Concertante together with
saxophonist James Romain and the Drake University Wind Ensemble under the baton of Robert Meunier. In September 2011,
Susan traveled to Stockholm to present a masterclass at the Music Academy and perform in a concert celebrating the 25th
anniversary of the Rollin' Phones saxophone quartet, the ensemble that launched her professional performing career.
Her 2009 CD release In Two Worlds (Innova 736)
features music for saxophone and electronics by John Anthony Lennon, James Paul Sain, Mark Engebretson, Reginald Bain, Judith
Shatin, Morton Subotnick and Edmund Campion. New CD releases in 2012 include a full CD of the music of Stuart Saunders
Smith on 11 West Records, and the Red Clay Saxophone Quartet performing music of Alejandro Rutty on Parma Records.
