Uncle Sam Will Write You A Check
To Do What You Love
--
By Matthew Lesko
If
you're an artist, writer, or do anything creative -- listen
up! The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is the arts
and culture arm of the U.S. government. And get this: in the
last 30 years they've given away over 111,000 grants to people
just like you who want to pursue a career in the arts!
They've got a 1999 budget of $98 million dollars. If you're
a creative person and want to make money doing what you love,
don't pass up free cash like this!
$9,000
To Teach Kids To Paint
Like
many artists, Michael Moonbird of Salt Lake City, Utah, had
plenty of passion, but not a lot of money. He tried to make
money designing logos in corporate America, but his heart
was never in it. To make ends meet, he took a job driving
a day-care school bus.
But
he was suddenly laid off. "If I was going to have money
struggles and be a creative person," he remembers, "I
thought that there had to at least be something that I could
do to make a living and yet still be myself and be creative."
Michael
signed up for a Small Business Association class, which lead
him to the Utah Arts Council. He bought a book on how to start
a non-profit organization for $10 -- he says now it was the
best investment he ever made.
With
no prior business knowledge and the help of his local NEA
branch, he got a $9,000 grant to start Bad Dog Rediscovers
America, a non-profit arts education program that mentors
inner city kids. What's more, he teaches inner city kids how
to create art and a good life for themselves.
Michael
is happier than he's ever been, and his NEA grant has lead
to even more money: $5,000 cash from American Express, free
digital video cameras from Casio, and the promise of even
more money from U.S. Bank.
Uncle
Sam Pays You To Create
Look,
the NEA doesn't care if you're the next Picasso. All you need
is a simple idea, and a plan on how you'll complete it. The
NEA is especially interested in projects that have a "community
outreach" angle.
The
NEA gives away grants in visual arts, photography, crafts,
literature, filmmaking, screenwriting, and many, many more
specialized categories. New for the year 2000 are grants awarded
to Internet web design and the digital arts.
Each
state's grant application guidelines are different, but the
application process is always simple.
The
best part about your local NEA programs is -- besides getting
free money -- you can get help writing your grants, marketing
yourself as an artist, and tons of steering support and assistance!
"My life has been greatly enhanced by the program,"
says Michael. "I could do this forever."
If
you follow my simple instructions, it will be easy to get
grants of up to $150,000 or more, depending on your area of
interest. Call the NEA at (202) 682-5400 (if you don't want
to wait through voice mail options, press "0" to
talk to a real person). Ask them for information on your state's
Arts Council grant programs. Or get the information on-line
at http://www.arts.endow.gov.
This
program, plus thousands of other free government cash programs
are listed in Matt Lesko's book, Free Money To Change Your
Life, available for $58.95.
