Basic Criteria:
- 4 contenders one of which must be the favorite
- The favorite must be below 3-1
- One of the 4 contenders must be a longshot above 8-1
- The other two contenders must be medium priced between 3-1 and 8-1
Box the trifecta using the favorite and longshot as co-keys. The longshot will usually be an in form final fraction horse (off-pace type) that will come on late in the race. The other 3 contenders might be suspect on surface, ability, or distance.
Typical pattern:
#1 1-1
#2 7-2
#3 9-2
#4 12-1
tri box: 1,4,2 and 1,4,3
Other Positives To Look For:
- All 4 contenders are consistantly ITM
- 3 of the 4 contenders are the clear top 3 tote choices
- High odds on the longshot which will generate high payoff
- The longshot is well bred with stud fee above USD 10k
