Murder Goes South

About the Friends of the Smyrna Library

The Friends of the Smyrna Library (FOSL) is a non-profit, volunteer organization that supports the Smyrna Public Library through fund raising events and volunteer activities. FOSL is a member of the Friends of Libraries USA organization and is one of the most active Friends chapters in Georgia. In addition to purchasing books/digital media resources for the library’s expansive collection and financially supporting the library’s many awarded programs, FOSL also sponsors the following:
  • "Murder Goes South" – our regionally acclaimed About the Friends of the Smyrna Libraryannual Southern mystery writer’s festival held each January
  • Smyrna Reading Group
  • Adopt-a-Shelf Volunteer Group
  • 3rd Thursday Adult Speaker’s Program
  • Children’s Summer Reading Program
  • Library Art Gallery Exhibits
  • Library Display Case Cultural Exhibits
  • Smyrna Dinner Theater
  • Recognition Awards For Staff and Volunteer Service to the Library
  • Spring and Fall Jonquil Festival Book Sales on the Village Green
  • Ongoing Book & Magazine Sale in the Library Lobby
  • Ink-Jet Cartridge Recycling Program
  • New and Exciting Programs Soon To Be Announced
FOSL makes it possible for the library to provide extra services, by fund raising and by providing volunteers to the library.  Membership is open to all for an annual tax-deductible contribution.

Our by-laws state that we are to:

  • Sponsor and promote activities, events, projects, etc., which will encourage members and the general public to use and support the Smyrna Public Library.
  • Foster closer relations between the Smyrna Public Library and the citizens;
  • Promote knowledge of the functions, resources and needs of the library.
  • Cooperate with the library staff and city officials in the development of superior resources, facilities and programs of the library.


The Friends of the Smyrna Library held their first organizational meeting April 5, 1990. Charter board members elected on June 19, 1990 were:

Membership in Friends has continued to grow and numbers approximately 420. Our sponsored events have become established on the annual calendars of area citizens, all of whom are welcome to join. We need your support so please join us by clicking on the membership link for an application.
