Dance Intensive |
Visit the great mosques of Istanbul ... there's nothing like the skyline there - minarets and domes, bridges and castle towers, the ships and ferries of the Bosphorous (day cruise included). See Topkapi Palace, the harem, Hagia Sophia, the underground cistern with Medusa, witness a whirling dervish ceremony, the mystical church of Chora, and we'll bathe and relax at a fully functioning historic Turkish bath!
Eat fish while strolling bands of Romani (Gypsy) musicians vie for your attention. Dance with them...surprise them with your Oriental Dance skills!
We'll shop at the world's largest ancient Covered Bazaar, music shops, and visit famous seamstresses to be fitted for some of those outrageous Turkish costumes. We'll visit some great classy dinner nightclubs where the best Turkish Oriental dancers perform and we'll also have our own party with Romani musicians.
We'll have at least eight hours (but possibly more) of dance classes with such teachers as Dr. Serpil, Reyhan Tuzsuz, Hale Sultan, Zibi, Birgul Beray, Sema Yildiz, and possibly Sibel Baris or Tulay Karaca (we cannot count on every one of these teachers, but we have employed many of these in the past and can depend on having classes with at least four of them). Eva of Denver will be your host. Eva has traveled to Turkey numerous and lengthy times and specializes in Turkish styles of dance, and has studied there with the best teachers. Seven previous times Eva has sponsored similar dance intensives in Istanbul. She was able to deliver much more than she advertised. Due to that success, she is offering this more thorough dance intensive tour. Maybe we can also fit in a class with Eva.
Some music classes can be arranged as well, by advance request.
Included in the cost of the dance intensive ... a trip out of town to attend a traditional festival of the Roma, welcoming the early buds of Spring, the flow of water, fertility, and life! Picnic on the fairgrounds, lots of live music, dance and frolic, jumping bonfires for good luck (it's OK to just watch ...) and feeling the joy of Roma families dancing for each other.
Sightseeing near the festival also included.
After a day in Istanbul, we will fly to Kayseri in the Anatolian region of Cappadocia, in Turkish it is written "Kapadokya". We'll stay in the town of Goreme and make day trips to visit ancient hidden Christian cities complete with churches and monasteries carved out of the rock, many with colorful frescos fully intact. Some are deep underground and some are dug out of eerie geological formations (even our hotel will be dug into the rock - with showers, of course!). This is a peaceful place with beautiful valleys where we will hike and, if you wish, ride donkeys; see villages with friendly polite people; and everywhere there are amazing hoodoos looking like "fairy chimneys".
We will choose small restaurants for our meals where there is traditional live music whenever possible, and Eva will arrange a Turkish folkdance class for us.
In Turkey, all along the way, there is always music, ripe fruit, great food and more music - we'll even learn some Turkish songs to impress the Turks!
See Maps of Turkey and Istanbul to learn more about where you'll be travelling.
