Sherefé is a band which plays popular dance and folk music from the Balkans and the Middle East: Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Macedonia, Bulgaria. Adherence to original scales, modes, forms, lyrics and rhythms is quite strict although there is also ample room for improvisation within these folk traditions. Original scales in the Middle East are known as "maqams" and frequently contain "quartertone" intervals which can't be played on well-tempered instruments. They add subtle fluidity in melody lines and musical ornamentation as well as some notes which definitely sound "different" to non-Middle Eastern ears. Rhythms can also include very common traditional dance beats in 7/8, 9/8, 11/8, etc. Sherefé performs frequently in the Denver-Boulder region at concerts and dance parties for both American and ethnic audiences. Contact: Cameron Powers at 303-449-4196 or Jesse Manno at 303-926-5445. Sherefe has just released an audio tape containing a sampling of recorded material from live performances. |
