Composer/Arranger in Residence
GARY URWIN - is an accomplished, Los Angeles-based trumpet player and arranger. He holds degrees in music from Oberlin College in Ohio, and in law from UCLA Law School. He first formed the Gary Urwin Jazz Orchestra as a recording band, and later as a band whose live performances lit up venues such as Catalina Bar & Grill, Charlie O’s, the Jazz Bakery, and Los Angeles Jazz Institute jazz festivals. Gary is known for his innovative arrangements and for always putting together an all-star cast of musicians who enthusiastically contribute their top-flight talents and camaraderie to his ensemble. The band has released three critically-praised CDs, titled: Perspectives; Living in the Moment; and Kindred Spirits. In its third CD, Kindred Spirits, the band combined its talents with two world-class soloists, trombonist Bill Watrous and tenor sax player Pete Christlieb. Though Watrous and Christlieb each have a long history of successful recordings individually, Gary’s album was their first appearance as a featured front line of soloists, you might say "together again for the first time." The band is now working on their 4th CD, with the working title “A Beautiful Friendship.” This recording again features Bill Watrous and Pete Christlieb as soloists, and also adds Carl Saunders on trumpet to the elite solo team.
