The best architect in the world told me what's wrong here. The outhouse would have been in the breezeway itself, hopefully down wind.
The dogtrot cabin started with the kitchen cabin. When the sleeping room cabin was built, a roof was put over the "dogtrot" between the two cabins.
Note that the "upstairs" was originally used as a sleeping platform.
