| It is a truth universally acknowledged that an 18th
Century novel containing an abbey of any sort, must be a Gothic novel.
However little the remaining bits of the volume in question may
resemble that genre, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of some
literary students, that it is impossible to dislodge even by force.
Not that anyone has tried, mind. May the sainted spirit of Mistress
Austen forgive me for liberties taken against Pride and Prejudice. |
