Ellery Eskelin, the leader of this band, is a musician with a large part of his heart anchored in the swinging jazz his mother used to play on the Hammond organ, working six-night-a-week gigs in Baltimore. His big-toned tenor has that swagger in it, and that salty flavor. You can hear it even when the music is at its least traditional, as Andrea Parkins runs unpredictable, dissonant sounds through the sampler she uses with her accordion, and drummer Jim Black whacks out insistent beats that are closer to alternative rock than to Art Blakey. How post-modern can you get? Post-modern with heart. Neither catchy riffs nor open, abstract forms sound out of place in the mix. What makes this music special is its lack of pretension and pose; efficient, honest, casting their net wide, Eskelin and co. capture a sense of the present day and its kaleidoscope of feelings and influences. It's unlike other music but surprisingly familiar the first time you hear it. The whole thing feels right. [TS]
