LEFT BANK JAZZ SOCIETY

Baltimore was my hometown. I've been living in New York and performing internationally for many years now but I still carry around fond memories of the Left Bank Jazz Society concerts that I heard in the late '70s and early '80s. Bands like Woody Shaw's group, Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition, Phil Woods, Big Nick Nicholas and many others..

The following information comes from the 1967 Left Bank Jazz Society of Baltimore yearbook. Many of these concerts were held at the legendary "Famous Ballroom" located on Charles Street in Baltimore, Maryland. The "Famous" was a charming place (note the painted clouds on the ceiling in the photo previous to this page) and was not unlike an indoor picnic in which folks from all over the city came together every Sunday afternoon from 5pm to 9pm to share in the great sounds.

There had been speculation that the 5/7/67 concert by John Coltrane had been cancelled. It has since been confirmed that this concert did indeed take place on the date listed and that this was in fact John Coltrane's last performance. Whether every other date listed here is 100% acurate is of course impossible to tell. I have left these listings intact however as they constitute an artifact that is of great interest to me personally and hopefully to you as you try to imagine a time in which all of these great artists were alive and playing regularly. The photographs are credited to Robert O. Torrence and are used without permission. Information regarding many aspects of the activities of the Left Bank Jazz Society have been hard to come by. It is my hope that dissemination of this material will be beneficial to all parties concerned.

Please note: I am not associated with the Left Bank Jazz Society. I get many requests for information regarding musicians who are listed in this chronology. I regret that I can offer no help in researching specific individuals. I would suggest contacting the Left Bank Jazz Society in Baltimore Maryland, however I'm informed that the organization may have come to an end.

PS Some of the photographs (including the one titled "people" at the bottom of the page) actually come from the Left Bank Jazz Society 1970 yearbook.
