Metamorphoses: St. Louis

The Management of St. Louis

It has been said that a proper gentleman (or gentle lady) knows respect for those of better station that himself (or herself). In order to assist individuals with that task, here follows a list of who the "People of Power" in St. Louis are. This list is not comprehensive; there might always be powerful figures lurking in the background that are not known about, and the vicissitudes of night-to-night life might always cause changes in the power structure. Still, it is hoped that this list will be of some service to some people....

Who's In Charge of the Camarilla:

The Prince: Prince Shannon Robertson of the Brujah Clan came to power in March of 1905, after uncovering the identity of the assassin that had struck down the previous Prince, Jean de la Courcel of the Ventrue. Prince Robertson remained in St. Louis during the diaspora that struck the city around the Great Depression, and has been working on rebuilding the city ever since. Prince Robertson is rarely seen at Kindred gatherings these days, preferring to spend time researching matters concerning the mythology and traditions of the Camarilla and Kindred in general, although the Prince does hold a formal court at least once a year. For the most part, the Prince is content to allow the Seneschal, Sheriff and Keeper of Elysium deal with most matters within the city, and prefers not to be disturbed with "minor matters of no importance," choosing only to get involved when situations absolutely require it. It is also known that Prince Robertson has a reputation as a Camarilla scholar, and often receives visits from high-ranking Camarilla officials wanting to discuss philosophical matters concerning the Sect.

The Seneschal: Vincent Valorian of the Ventrue Clan was named Seneschal of St. Louis in 1968, after he was able to get a number of public construction and other similar civic renovation programs up and running. Prince Robertson had attempted to get a number of these projects off the ground a decade or two earlier and failed, despite swaying several local politicians to back the ventures. Realizing this minor Venture achieved success where even the Prince had failed, Prince Roberton placed Vincent in a position of power, using him as a "right hand man" when needed. Over time, Prince Robertson granted Vincent more and more powers as the Seneschal of St. Louis, recognizing Vincent's ability to efficiently get things done within within the city. In 1981, Prince Robertson turned over the running of the "mundane, night to night" matters in St. Louis to Seneschal Valorian. Since then, the Seneschal has done an admirable job running St. Louis and keeping the city working, and is viewed by many as the power behind the throne. Seneschal Valorian has worked closely with Sheriff Willamina Fairbrooks and Keeper Bedavere over the past decades, and the three of them have managed to keep St. Louis running smoothly and efficiently, with only occasional minor problems.

The Sheriff: Willamina Fairbrooks of the Toreador was named Sheriff of St. Louis by Prince Robertson in 1965, after Willamina gave the Prince several good suggestions in how to handle a troublesome Gangrel. The Gangrel in question had broken the Masquerade -- twice -- and the Prince was at a loss as to how to properly punish the unrepentant Gangrel. Willamina, then a close confidant of the Prince, suggested that the quarrelsome Kindred be publicly destroyed -- and that the Gangrel Primogen, who had obviously not kept his Clanmate in check, be punished as well. Prince Robertson forced the Gangrel Primogen to personally slay the Gangrel who had caused so much stress, and then staked the Primogen and hung him from the chandeliers in a location only accessible to the Kindred of St. Louis for a week. Afterwards, as a reward for the advice (and other good suggestions Willamina had made since coming to St. Louis), Prince Robertson made the Toreador Sheriff. She has done her best to ensure that the laws of the city are kept, and operates under the principle that most Primogen should look to take care of their Clans, ensuring that she need not get involved in disciplining members of them -- but that she will take care of matters before the Prince needs to get involved, usually to the dismay of the individual problematic Kindred and their Primogen. Michael Szabo, the Toreador Primogen, serves as Sheriff Fairbrook's Deputy.

The Keeper of Elysium: James Gawain Bedavere of the Malkavian Clan was named Keeper of Elysium by Prince Robertson in 1972, after James took great pains to show his displeasure with a particularly boisterous Brujah who had interrupted a conversation James and the Prince were having by punching James in the face, mid-sentence. James promptly staked the offending Brujah and publicly tortured him for a week to ensure that the Brujah learned his lesson to never interrupt conversations again. The torture was supposed to last for a month, but at the end of the first week, the Prince intervened, destroying the Brujah and naming Bedavere as Keeper, stating that "no one, not even the most debased and lunatic Malkavian, would wish to disrupt [James'] peace." Since then, James has taken to his role as Keeper smoothly, ensuring that the various Elysia of St. Louis are safe and civilized places for Kindred to do business and mingle, only periodically having to punish or destroy those who do not follow the scant rules he has set out. His clanmate, Douglas Mortimer, serves as him as an Assistant Keeper of Elysium, and Mark Bateman of the Brujah has also been named as an Assistant Keeper of Elysium (although Keeper Bedavere has pointed out that Bateman is an Assistant Keeper Pro Temp).

The Harpy: Shortly after the Primogen Council reconvened, they ratified Lionel Bradford of the Gangrel Clan as the Greater Harpy of St. Louis. Harpy Bradford was assisted by Azrael Knight of the Nosferatu and Ted Reynolds of the Tremere; however, after some rather public disagreements between the three Kindred as to how best serve as the "undying memory of faux paus, innuendo, gossip, rumor and scandal" of the city, the Primogen Council decided to no longer back Bradford as the Greater Harpy and removed him from office; Lesser Harpy Reynolds resigned from his position shortly after. The Primogen Council chose Azrael Knight as their new Greater Harpy for the city, and the Nosferatu accepted the position. Harpy Knight is assisted by Douglas Mortimer, a relatively-newly Embraced Malkavian who also serves as an Assistant Keeper of Elyisum.

The Primogen: After the Malkavian Primogen, Leanne Rey, attempted to murder the Prince in November of 1998 - presumably influenced by the "Week of Nightmares" that had affected all Malkavians during that time - Prince Robertson disbanded the Primogen Council. It was not until recently that the Prince indicated that there should be a Primogen Council again, and after a false start or two, one was selected. At this time, the Primogen consist of Matthias Griffin of the Brujah, Sanford Hicks of the Gangrel, Evelein Aislin of the Malkavians, Mary Aphra of the Nosferatu, Micheal Szabo of the Toreador, Maxim Albrecht of the Tremere and Julian Harcourt of the Ventrue. It is known that the Brujah, Gangrel, Nosferatu and Ventrue Primogen have selected Whips to serve their Clans (Mark Bateman, Tyra Pelham, Pa and Tatiana, respectively), but it is not known if other Primogen have named Whips as well.

The Scourge: None of the Princes of St. Louis have felt the need for this Office to be filled by anyone in the city, preferring to let the Seneschal, Keeper of Elysium and Sheriff maintain order.

Who's In Charge of the Anarchs:

While the concept of "leaders" among the Anarchs might be seen as paradoxical to some people, there are still those members of the Cause who are viewed as more responsible and trustworthy than others. There were three Anarchs -- Joseph Kerr, Judith and John Trent -- who brokered a rough agreement with Prince Robertson when their sect came to town back in 1996; accordingly, these three Kindred are generally seen as the supposed "heads" of the Anarchs in the area. Of course, since Judith has seemingly retired from the public eye and moved on to another city, only John Trent and Joseph Kerr (who insists on being called "Jack" now) are viewed as the "leaders of the Anarchs, and the people the Camarilla will primarily contact if there are problems or concerns with Anarch activity in the area. Of course, as Anarchs come and go from the area, this might change, but for now -- Jack and John and the main Anarchs "in charge...."
