Other Web Pages of Interest Simply put, here a number of links that you all might enjoy looking at -- some are about St. Louis itself, some are for other LARPs going on, and others are just things of interest that might amuse you. Check them out, enjoy, and if you want to add something to these pages, let us know! St. Louis Related Links The City of St. Louis Community Information Network. Here it is; the official page about the city, run by the city. If you want to know about the Police Department, Fire Department, Office of the Mayor or other bureaucratic matters, get some maps and an "tourist's eye view" of the City, this is the usually the first place to look. St. Louis Neighborhoods. Technically a sub-page of the Community Information Network mentioned above, this page has links to the seventy-nine different neighborhoods that make of the City of St. Louis. It's a fascinating place to find out things about the city that you might normally not find out -- like the names and breakdowns of the neighborhoods, for one thing. GatewayArch.com and Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. You can't talk about St. Louis without talking about the Arch, you know? Here are two pages -- one for the official National Park Service website about the park that includes the Arch, and one for the actual group running tours up to the top of the Arch and around the park. Explore St. Louis. Of course, there's a lot more to tourism in St. Louis than the Arch. This page is the "official tourism and travel portal" of St. Louis, and you'll be able to find lots of links to the various attractions in the city from here if you want to. Mind you, it's still mainly "middle of the road" and mainstream stuff -- but it is a fast way to find out about the galleries, museums, good restaurants and riverboat gambling in town, right? The Metro. This is the homepage for the mass-transit systems of St. Louis, the various light rail, riverboat and bus systems people use to get around the city when they don't have a car. It's got some interesting information -- like just how easy it is to get from East St. Louis to St. Louis, for instance -- and who knows, it might be useful to some of you.... The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. This is the main paper of record for St. Louis. There are some other papers that cater to specific groups within St. Louis, such as The St. Louis American (which primarily serves African-Americans) or The St. Louis Business Journal or the local "alternative" paper, the Riverfront Times, but for the most part, the Post-Dispatch is the paper most people read. The St. Louis Family. For some reason, the Underworld and the Street always seem to be areas of influence people want to get control over as soon as possible during a game. While that's fine, we figured that some people might actually like to know the history of organized crime in St. Louis, going back from the days of the Green Ones and the Pillow Gang, to nowadays, where organized crime appears to be on the wane in the city.... The U.S. Naval Observatory Data Services. Ever wonder how Eric figures out when sunrise and sunset for St. Louis on the day of the games is? Or how he knows what phase the moon is in? Well, he goes to the U.S. Naval Observatory and figures it out there! They can even tell you about upcoming eclipses, transits and other astronomical events. It's very easy to use, and capable of giving you information for more than just St. Louis, if you need it.... Gaming-Related Links White Wolf Online. The Big Daddy of it all, these are the people who made the World of Darkness and almost all of the rules we're playing with. They're also now home to The Camarilla, an officially run fan-based group that runs a world-spanning LARP with thousands of players. (Yes, The Camarilla used to be run by a group other than White Wolf, but after some nasty legal issues involving copyrights, White Wolf now runs it). Sadly, White Wolf no longer offers "World of Darkness v1.0" material on their site, so you'll have to scour your local retailers or check out eBay to find a copy of The Laws of the Night: Revised if you don't have it already; worse comes to worse, you can get an electronic PDF copy at DriveThruRPG (incidentally, that link will take you right to their Mind's Eye Theatre catalog, where they have almost every LARP book White Wolf put out available, usually under $10 a book). One World By Night. Sort of like the Camarilla fan club, this is also a large, world-spanning LARP with thousands of players. However, they have a different hierarchy and organization than The Camarilla does, and each GM is pretty much allowed to run his own show -- I believe. The random character generator they have (located here) is very neat and semi-useful as well, incidentally. Again, I'm not a member, nor do I condone them, but they are neat to check out. Grapevine LARP Utility Program. This is a nifty little database for organizing and maintaining Mind's Eye Theatre LARP characters. It's good for all MET LARP characters, from Kindred to Kine, and we're using it for this game! It's far from perfect, being a home-grown labor of love by one programmer, but it's better than any other MET LARP management program out there (especially since the other major program out there, the Vampire Print Shop has been taken off line at the request of White Wolf and the Camarilla.). Feel free to check it out; who knows, you might want to grab a copy of it yourself. Rock~Paper~Scissors Online! Frequently, there comes a time when you have to throw a challenge with someone, but aren't going to see that person in the flesh for many days, if not weeks or even months. That's when a page like this comes in handy (and replaces the much-loved and much-lamented "Roshambo Rampage" that the Brunching Shuttlecocks used to run before their site went effectively dead); all you need to know is your opponent's email address, and you can be playing with them in moments. The site includes many interesting things, including a strategy guide for the game. This site is not for the weak; as the authors of the site repeatedly remind the visitor, "This is serious." Jason Corley's Homepage! I refer to this guy's writings a lot, especially for the "Stupid LARP Tricks" for clans. Here's his page itself, so you can look at his other semi-brilliant ideas.... (I personally like the "Exploding Dinosaur Bombs" for Mage!) Other LARPs We've Heard About Flint: Sanctuary's Edge. Well, I know some of the players in our games come down to Ann Arbor from Saginaw and Flint and other places like that, and I figured I should let you all know about some games that might be happening closer to your turf! This Anarch game is run by Marian Aanerud, who also plays the Anarch Ani Carin Bybee in our game. It takes place in Flint, it involves Anarchs, it's part of the One World by Night group of inter-connected LARPs, and from what I've been hearing, the people involved with it are having a good time (although I personally haven't had a chance to go check it out). Feel free to check out the site, make the trip and check it out -- the more games the merrier, right? Winter's Brief Respite. And, speaking of games up near Saginaw and Flint, Ryan Merten (who plays Charlie "Richter" MacNemera in this LARP) is running a Changeling LARP. As far as I know, the game is not part of the Camarilla Fan Club or the One World By Night games; the game meets on "odd Fridays" at UM in Flint, and is set in modern-day Flint. There isn't really a website for the game; the link takes you to the Yahoo Group mailing list for the game, but Ryan has posted character generation and setting information on the list; they're some of the first messages on the list. Join the list, check out the information and so on -- as always, the more games, the better! Sapientia in Tenebris. We've mentioned the Camarilla Fan Club periodically above, and well, they've officially set up an Ann Arbor chapter (technically, it's Chapter MI-013-I, which covers Washtenaw and Jackson Counties). Although the Vampire: The Masquerade venues have ended, the website for the chapter states that the Vampire: The Requiem venue games will begin in January (although there is little information about that game aside of that). It is unknown if this chapter's Changeling LARP is still running, as well. Still, it is hoped that they will eventually update their in-character pages (at http://www.sap-ten.org/ic.html) and let people know what's going on with their games; for now, it's unknown if they're still running things, you know? Cursed. This game, run by Amy and Mike Weaver (who respectively play Sheryl Daniels and Silas George in our game) is a werewolf LARP using a rule-set of Amy's own design -- it's neither Werewolf: The Apocalypse or Werewolf: The Forsaken, but uses elements from both systems to create something new. The game will be running once a month here in Ann Arbor, and is tentatively scheduled not to conflict with our game. Feel free to check out the site and see if things sound interesting to you.... That's about it for LARPs in the area that we know about, but as we learn of other games, we'll post their links here, okay? |
