The Keeper of Elysium's Rules

These Rules have been created by the Keeper of Elysium, James Gawain Bedavere, and have been slowly added to over time. Read them, keep them in mind -- and remember that Keeper Bedavere is harsh in his enforcement of these rules....

The Basic Rules (That Which Should Not Have To Be Said, But Often Is):

  1. All Kindred are expected to keep the Traditions and the Prince's Laws in mind while in an Elysium.

  2. The use of violence is prohibited within Elysium.

  3. The carrying of weapons is allowed within Elysium. However, the laws of the mortal populace apply within Elysium, so illegal weaponry is not permitted, as Kindred will most likely have to pass through the mortal world to enter Elysium.

  4. The use of Disciplines that endanger the Masquerade is forbidden within Elysium.

  5. The destruction of art within an Elysium shall be a violation of Hospitality and dealt with appropriately.

Additional Rules:

  1. Added in 1967: No Smoking; the sound Irritates us. It is a nasty habit. One should remember that the man who introduced the English to cigarettes met his end at the end of an ax.

  2. Added in 1967: No Pets without prior arrangement. This includes ghouls, retainers and other non-kindred in the Kindred only areas.

  3. Added in 1974: No Nudity. No one wants to hear how "pretty" your bare flesh is. Arranged "art" shows involving the exposure of flesh should endeavor to arrange so that it is clean flesh. Track marks are not appealing, even to Kindred.

  4. Added in 1985: All those invited by the Prince, so long as they respect The Traditions and the Rules of Elysium are welcome. Please do not presume to know better than the Prince who "belongs" in Elysium.

  5. Added in 1985: No cameras, tape decks or other audio/video recording devices allowed in Elysium. The threat to the First Tradition is far too overwhelming, and Dirty Pool is most assuredly to be discouraged while in Elysium. If someone's word is not enough to conduct business, then perhaps one should not be conducting business with said individual?

  6. Added in 1999: All Mobile Phones must either be turned off or set to "vibrate". It is rude to interrupt those speaking, even if in another room, by the shrill electronic cry for attention.

  7. Added in 1999: If one is to speak on one's Mobile Phone please use the Phone Alcoves situated throughout the Private Areas of Elysium. Unless in a private meeting where the call might be relevant, it is rude to talk on a phone in a public area.

  8. Added in 2005: While Elysium is a place of safety where Kindred can gather, and abusing one's blood talents for personal gain is not only gauche but highly discouraged within these walls, it should be noted that there are some gifts of The Blood that are involuntary. As we would pity an epileptic mortal, we must pity those that are not in full control of themselves. Our pity is not infinite however, and should this small mercy be abused or if the resultant disruption should be above and beyond the tolerances of the reigning powers the individual(s) in question will be dealt with.

Expected Behavior Within Elysium:

Elysium is a communal gathering ground where all those who wish to participate in Polite Kindred Society may gather to discuss, confer and commiserate without fear of reprehensible acts and violence, physical or mental.

Elysium is also a sanctuary and refuge from the outside world. The definition of Polite Kindred Society differs greatly from one individual to the next, however, bear in mind that while we share many traits due to The Blood, The Blood also has its effects upon our peers and betters as well. Standards of Kindred behavior are generous to accommodate our less fortunate brethren and while refined elegance and suave presentations are not only accepted, but encouraged, it is well remembered that not all of us are so fortunate. Please be patient with your fellow Kindred, especially those that are not fully 'here' as the neonates say. As long as they pose no risk to the traditions and the disruption caused is minor or enlightening enough individual peculiarities will be tolerated. Abuse of the spirit or the letter of our guidelines, however, will invoke harsh retribution.

One should recognize that Elysium is a shared Domain; as such, it is technically the Domain of all Kindred in the Domain and one should act as if they were visiting the personal demesnes of the Primogen, Sheriff, Prince or Seneschal, for in fact that is what is occurring. Breeching the Rules of Elysium is in effect a violation of these luminaries' Domain and will be treated as such. Failure to behave in a proper manner is a slight against the Prince and will be redressed as appropriate.

It should not need to be necessary, but as Elysia are often in public, or semi-public places, one should remember all six Traditions as well as any special rules regarding the current Elysium you are in.

Should the threat of the combined might of the Primogen and the personal displeasure of the Prince fail to caution you, perhaps because one feels that the Primogen and Prince, being distant and important personages cannot watch Elysium and attend to their duties and whims at the same time, I would like to make another point. With all his other duties, it should come as no surprise then that the Prince has a personal attendant of Elysium, and that this person is given Domain over those areas declared such by His Majesty. I shall treat any violations of the express laws, their letter, the spirit or any uncivil act as if it had occurred in my own haven, and judiciously apply any and all means to properly impress upon any who break the laws of our society the importance of the Six Traditions and the purpose of Elysium.

While all are welcome within the bounds of Elysium, only those of The Blood are welcome in certain areas. Should trouble follow one to Elysium, one should contact the Keeper and the Sheriff about redressing such issues immediately. Repeated behavior or sufficient "trouble" being led to the safe place, or the violation of various rules of Elysium during the handing of such "trouble" will net the offender the Prince's (and my) personal ire.
