Elysiums and Other Territories You Should Know About

Keeper Michaelson's "Rules of Elysium"

  1. All Kindred are expected to keep the Traditions and the Prince's Laws in mind while in an Elysium.
  2. The use of violence is prohibited within Elysium.
  3. The carrying of weapons is allowed within Elysium. However, the laws of the mortal populace apply within Elysium, so illegal weaponry is not permitted, as Kindred will most likely have to pass through the mortal world to enter Elysium.
  4. The use of Disciplines that endanger the Masquerade is forbidden within Elysium.

Elysiums

The city has very few locations that have been actually declared Elysium. Jeremy Michaelson, the Keeper of Elysium, has declared only seven locations in all of New York City permanent Elysium. Please be aware that many mortals use these locations as well - they are not "Kindred only" locations. He has created numerous "temporary Elysiums," but only the following seven locations have been permanently declared Elysium:

  1. "The Smoking Room," a private club that was once "The Top of the Sixes," a restaurant located at 666 5th Avenue. The restaurant was turned into a private club (and declared an Elysium) in 1994, and Prince de Luca owns it. She holds Court there once every three months (more frequently if there are problems) in a private room that is a mostly "Kindred only" location.
  2. Lincoln Center. The entirety of the Lincoln Center Complex has been declared an Elysium. Additionally, there is a small private club, known as "The Highest Note" on the roof of the Avery Fisher Hall (where the Philharmonic performs). This Club belongs to Robert Day, the Toreador Primogen, and all Kindred in the City that have been Acknowledged have membership in it. Prince de Luca occasionally holds Court in The Highest Note instead of The Smoking Room. The Highest Note was built by the Brujah Justicar and declared an Elysium in 1977.
  3. ABC No Rio. This punk rock venue and art gallery, located at 156 Rivington Street, is owned by both Robert Day and Shane McMurty, the Brujah Primogen. It was named an Elysium in 1981. In addition to hosting many hardcore bands and several prominent art shows, it is periodically used by the Brujah Clan to host rants.
  4. The Lion's Den. Cary White, the Nosferatu Primogen, is the owner of this bar at 214 Sullivan Street. It is often used as an informal meeting place for Kindred - no formal occasions are held there. Keeper Michaelson named it Elysium in 1987.
  5. The Cathedral of St. John the Divine (at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue) was declared an Elysium in 1984. The territory is in the possession of Clan Tremere, who maintain and protect it.
  6. The Cloister Museum, in Fort Tyron Park, was named an Elysium in 1979. The park is the territory of the Gangrel Clan, who are charged with keeping the area "safe" for use. Primogen Anna Mueller takes great pride in keeping Cloisters available to all.
  7. The Ontological Theatre, at 131 East 10th Street, has been named an Elysium. The Theatre itself is the territory of "Irma Vep," the Malkavian Primogen. It is widely believed that Keeper Michaelson granted the Theater the status of Elysium to mollify Ms. Vep, as there have been few gatherings there since it was made an Elysium in 1992.

Other Territories of Note

The city has very few "privately" held territories. Prince de Luca has openly stated that she considers New York City to be her Domain (in accordance with the Second and Fifth Traditions). Prince de Luca has eliminated most personal territories; she has instead, instituted a policy that all Kindred are to work to maintain the Domain of New York City. This does not apply to private property or havens - if a person actually owns a building, they, not the city as a whole, are responsible for it's upkeep and safety.

According to Prince de Luca, owning a territory is more trouble than it is worth; the owner of the territory, according to her laws, gains no real power over the place, but they get the trouble of having to make sure that all laws are obeyed there.... In any case, only a few formal territories have been granted.

The members of Clan Tremere have been granted the Morgan Library (formerly the Pierpont Morgan Library, at 29 East 36th Street) as territory. This has put them into some conflict with the Ventrue in New York, as their Primogen is a member of the Morgan family. However, the Tremere do allow open access to the Library - as long as they have advanced knowledge of the visit.

Clan Ventrue has been granted the New York Stock Exchange (at 11 Wall Street) as territory. The Ventrue have asked that people restrain from feeding there; this contradiction of Prince de Luca's Laws has not been openly questioned.

The Downtown Rifle & Pistol Club (at 24 Murray Street) and the Westside Rifle & Pistol Range (at 20 West 20th Street) are the territory of Clan Brujah. The Brujah Primogen allows all Kindred access to the ranges, and periodically holds firearm safety and marksmanship classes at the Downtown range.

Prince de Luca granted her clan The Metropolitan Museum of Art (at 1000 5th Avenue) as territory, with one condition: the Nosferatu Clan must be allowed access to the museum at all times. Prince de Luca has stated that if her Clan refuses Clan Nosferatu unconditional access to the Metropolitan, she grant the museum as territory to the Gangrel Clan.

Incidentally, Clan Nosferatu has been granted both The Russian Tea Room (at 150 West 57th Street) and Flute (a small champagne bar at 205 West 54th Street) as their territory, provided that they allow the Toreador unconditional access as well. Failure to allow Toreador into the Tea Room or Flute will cause Prince de Luca to grant these territories to the Gangrel as well.

Finally, Clan Malkavian has been granted CBGB OMFUG (at 315 Bowery), 213 Park Avenue South (former site of Max's Kansas City) and The Knitting Factory (at 74 Leonard Street) as territory.
