About
the Tournament
The Calabasas High School
basketball program presents an all-comers charity basketball tournament to support ALS research – The Ernie Wallengren
Memorial Hoop Fest.
The tournament will be open to
recreational and competitive teams on October 29, 2005 beginning at 8 AM. This is the third annual hoop fest. Last year was a huge success and we are looking to have
an equally wonderful time again in 2005! The event will feature competition between some of the top talent in
the greater Calabasas area, as well as from celebrity, corporate, and recreational teams, in order to raise awareness
for ALS research.
In July 1939, Lou Gehrig stood before thousands of fans in Yankee Stadium,
weakened from the early symptoms of ALS, and said, "I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth." In the face
of one of his greatest challenges, Lou Gehrig demonstrated great humility and appreciation for life, and has come to be known
as one of history’s most powerful symbols of quiet strength and leadership.
The Ernie Wallengren Hoop Fest
is a dedication to another great leader, a leader in the Calabasas community, Mr. Ernie Wallengren, who succumbed to ALS in
2003. Ernie was a pivotal part of the Calabasas community, who much like Gehrig, was
a silent leader. A successful writer, he has five children who attend local schools. He founded and coached a local club basketball team and was a basketball coach at
Calabasas High School. His selfless and passionate dedication
to youth basketball in the community inspired friends, families, and coaches. He
loved basketball, community, and fun and dedicated a great deal of himself to provide positive pursuits for youth.
Inspired by Ernie's leadership,
The Ernie Wallengren Hoop Fest sets aside a day of fun to be shared by the community, families, friends, and basketball
fans, having fun in a positive manner for the sake of ALS research.
There will be over 20 teams
competing in regulation games throughout the day. Approximately 200 players
will participate from 8 AM until the early evening. Breakfast, lunch
and dinner will be available. A fabulous silent auction and a 3-point shooting
contest will be featured.
“He touched so many people's
lives…
I wouldn’t be who I am today, if it weren’t for Ernie…”
