Missions and Targets on the Range

One of several static targets on the Strip Range.

C-141 Stratolifter cargo drop

A small load of A-22s descends on "the Farm."

A-22s are four 55 gallon drums full of water on a pallet, with a 100' parachute.

We regularly recovered up to 40 of these as many as 3 times a day.

There are several drop zones on and around EAFB, the main ones used are the Farm Drop Zone, PB-8, and Rogers lakebed.

An aerial gunnery tow target

These are towed behind an aircraft on a long cable in a figure-8 pattern, and shot at by another aircraft. Firing only occurs during the arc at the "ends" of the figure-8.

MK17 Nuclear shape near PB-8

Bomb is vertical, with the tail section broken off, the casing is 3" steel. This monster was nearly 25' long, 62" in diameter, and weighed nearly 42,000 lbs. Approximately 30,000 lbs of this was casing. The equally huge B-36 Peacemaker was the only aircraft capable of carrying it.

XP-81
XP-81

One of two on the range, this was a hybrid of the old and new technologies.
It had a jet engine in the rear, and a propeller in the front.

It was superseded by all jet aircraft, and never made it into production.

Interestingly, wood was used on the fairings in front of the intakes.

A Photoresolution Pad

One of many such pads along Photoresolution road. This one is oriented about 60 degrees vertical, most are horizontal. Many of the aircraft and other vintage equipment and vehicles are arrayed around these pads.
