Notes:
MEMO in support of Eliza Allen b. 1800 as wife of Charles Brown (rev. 16 Sep 2007). I now believe that this Elizabeth Allen's parents were Capt. ISAAC ALLEN, b. Harpswell, Me., 2 Nov. 1775, son of Elijah and Bethiah (Freese) Allen, who married 1st in Harpswell on 15 Feb 1798 ELIZABETH ALEXANDER, b. Harpswell 17 Nov 1778, dau of Samuel Alexander and Rosannah (Clark) Allen of Bailey's Island, Hapswell, Maine. (For issues involving parents, please see their record in this database.)
-
ELIZA's birth appears in Isaac Allen's family record in the Freeport Vital Records, p. 60 [from LDS film at NEHGS, transcribed in this database on Elizabeth Alexander's record]. Isaac had two daughters of interest:
--ELIZA ALLEN, b. 24 Aug 1800, by his first wife Elizabeth ____, [who has been shown to be Elizabeth Alexander].
--ELIZABETH ALLEN, b. 16 Sep 1807, by his second wife Hannah Douglass. [This Elizabeth b. 1807 married Jonathan Field; see paragraph at bottom of this entry].
-
Independant evidence strongly points to our Eliza b. 24 Aug 1800 being Elizabeth, the wife of Charles Brown. Her date of birth given on her gravestone as Elizabeth, wife of Charles Brown, is 1800, which is consistent with Eliza's. Also, Elizabeth's average DOB in the FOUR US censuses in which she appears as Charles's wife is between 3 Jun 1800 and 2 Jun 1801, all in Maine. (Elizabeth's age is given very consistently: 1850 ae. 48; 1860 ae. 60; 1870 ae. 69; 1880 ae. 79.) She was recorded as being of Freeport at her marriage, which was at an appropriate age of 23. These data are very supportive of our Eliza's b. 24 Aug 1800 being the wife of Charles Brown.
-
DATE OF DEATH: Our Eliza-Elizabeth's 1885 DOD is from her gravestone and is consistent with her presence in 1880 USC Durham ME in the household of her son Francis.
-
Her dates are given in gravestone records from two transcriptions:
"Deacon Charles Brown, d. 1868 ae 66
Delia A., his wife, d. 1826
Elizabeth, wife of Charles Brown, d. 1885, ae 85."
[src: Thurlow R. Dunning, Sr., "Dunning Freeport Cemetery Survey, July 7, 1973" (at Freeport Community Library, Bartol Room).]

"Brown, Charles 1802-1868 [spouses:] Delia A/Elizabeth Brown
Brown, Delia A. d. 1826 [spouse:] Charles Brown
Brown, Elizabeth 1800-1885 "

----
MARRIAGE: Existence of marriage on 30 OCT 1823 of "Mr. Charles Brown & Miss Elizabeth Allen" both of Freeport is verified by Freeport Vital Records. She is recorded as being of Freeport, Maine, at her marriage.
- ---
Her name appears as a witness (with her mark) on a deed at Cumb. Deeds bk 195 p 153-5 in March 1846.

In addition, following the death of her husband Charles, she appears in 1870 in Durham, Androscoggin Co., Me., living next door to her son Francis J. (there Frank J.):
BROWN, ELIZABETH, ae 69, "keeping house". [CALC DOB BET 3 JUN 1800 AND 2 JUN 1801]. [Census Place: Durham, Androscoggin, Maine; Roll: M593_536; Page: 84; Image: 170.]

[ Durham, Androscoggin, Maine; Roll: T9_475; Family History Film: 1254475; Page: 111.1000; Enumeration District: 4; Image: 0215.]
===
[Furthermore, hard data conclusively shows that her younger half-sister Elizabeth b. 16 Sep 1807, (with whom Eliza-Elizabeth has been confused), married Jonathan Field. This data include her 1831 intentions; a Brunswick family record VR giving her DOB as married woman as 16 Sep 1807, and her gravestone as Jonathan's wife in Lunt Memorial Cemetery (Brunswick-S.Durham) with dates 1807-1879. (Thanks to Malcolm Allen, Paul Kinder, & Jon Field for these data.)]
