- Notes:
-
Her lineage as a Mayflower descendant from Mayflower passenger Francis Cooke was approved by the General Society of Mayflower Descendents in 1994 (General Soc.
#61,036 to dau Frances & beyond) and in 2004 (General Soc. #73,907 to son Stephen [III] & beyond ) .
-
Deborah was the child of William Bennett (b. 1727 in Middleborough MA) and Tabitha (Bryant) Bennett (b. 1731 in Plympton MA). Her parents and many siblings moved to
Bennett's Mills in West Woodstock VT by the 1780s (H.S. Dana, History of Woodstock, p 246, 425), and Deborah's name appears as witness to a 1782 deed signed by her
brother Jabez. Her father died in Woodstock on 24 Feb 1784., and she married settler Stephen Farnsworth [II] in Woodstock the following year. They lived in South
Woodstock and had fourteen children, including my ancestor Stephen Farnsworth [III] and also Terah Bennet Farnsworth. She named the latter child after her brother Terah
Bennet (thus providing additional evidence that links the Farnsworth and Bennett families). It is not clear where Deborah lived following her husband's death in 1829, for
Deborah was not to die until 1845. Her grave in the Sheddsville Cemetery in West Windsor VT is next to that of her daughter Laura (Farnsworth) Myrick.
-
BEST SOURCES: Deborah's birth is recorded in Middleborough MA VR v.1 p181; Ralph V. Wood's "Francis Cooke of the Mayflower" #3970, v. 12, p592 (1999); Farnsworth
& Nye's "Farnsworth Memorial 2d ed."; and Saunderson's "Hist. of Charlestown NH" p 342; Smith "Descendants of Stephen Bryant of Plymouth" NEHGS Register v154:p.236;
and in family records, such as Frank L. Hoisington's "Friends who have crossed the river -- Family Record" (1909).
-
Her death is recorded in a VT state VR abstract; in Saunderson, op. cit.; in Farnsworth & Nye, op. cit.; and in Hannibal C. Ford's "Ford Family Genealogy" v. 1, p515, 616
index no. 1145-46 [1950 ms. at NEHGS]; in family records; and on her gravestone in the Sheddsville Cemetery in West Windsor VT. (Canfield's "Valley of the Kedron" p248
mistakenly said that this Deborah was buried in the Morgan-Farnsworth Cem. in South Woodstock, but the Deborah buried in the Morgan-Farnsworth Cem. was her
daughter.)
-
Her marriage to Stephen [II] is recorded in Woodstock VRs "Bk B, 1760-1851", p83; in Saunderson's "History of Charlestown NH" p342; in Farnsworth & Nye's "Farnsworth
Memorial 2d ed." p363; in Frank L. Hoisington's "Friends Who Have Crossed the River - Family Record" (which also gives her birthdate, thus ID her as dau of Wm.); & in
Hamilton C. Ford's "Ford Family Genealogy," v. 1 p515, 616 (Great Neck, NY, 1950) (9 volumes typescript) (copies at NEHGS, NY Public Library, Detroit Public Library, etc.).
The Ford Family Genealogy also gives her Bennett parents and line.
-
To avoid confusion I should note that the Farnsworth Memorial II [doc 6.4] erroneously added two children to the list of Stephen and Deborah's children: FM II p366 now
shows a new "Sarah Bennet Farnsworth," who was allegedly born with a birth date identical to that of the valid child, Terah. Probably the editors were misled by an
erroneous state abstract of the town record that misreads the "Te" of Terah as "Sa." But FM II's editors, thank goodness, did not also delete the original Terah from their
book. The Woodstock original record is clear: Terah Bennet Farnsworth was the only child born on 12 Apr 1792, and Sarah Bennet Farnsworth does not appear here or in
any other original record [Woodstock VT town record book "Births Marriages, Book B 1760-1851" p83)].
-
----(The FM II editors compounded their error by misreading an ambiguous state abstract to create a second erroneous child "Asa," in addition to the original record's
valid "Ora," b. 28 Mar1794.)
