NOTES AND SOURCES: BARNABAS HENRY BARTOL was the son of Barnabas and Rebecca (Eells) Bartol [see person 8]. He was born in Freeport in
1816 and died in Philadelphia in 1888 [Dunning's Bartol genealogy]. He married EMMA JEMIMA WELCHMAN, born in Kineton, Warwickshire, Eng.
on 2 Apr 1821 [NEHGS Register v81 p476], the dau of Edward and Jemima (Williams) Welchman. He was an engineer whose accomplishments
designing Cuban sugar mills, the C&O Canal, Bessemer furnaces, the mechanics for the frigate Wabash and New Ironsides, and Washington gas
light company (its president) are related in the Bartol papers at the Freeport Historical Society and in Dunning's Bartol genealogy. The couple
acquired great wealth, which, on the initiative of their heirs, benefited the town and built its B.H. Bartol Memorial Public Library. It is said that they
felt that New York and Philadelphia had more millionaires than Freeport, so it was time to even things up. In 2004, his and his wife's portraits still
hang in the Bartol Room of the new town library. The original Bartol Memorial Library on Freeport's Main Street is now an Abercrombie and Fitch
yuppie store. Dunning's Bartol genealogy states they had two children.
