American Periodicals: A Journal of History, Criticism, & Bibliography
consisting of essays, notes, reviews,
bibliographical checklists, periodical miscellany |
American Periodicals
is an annual publication devoted exclusively to scholarship and
criticism
relating to American magazines and newspapers of all periods,
including reviews of books in
the
subject area.
American
Periodicals has a new publisher (Ohio State University Press) and a new
editorial team (Susan Williams, Steve Fink, and Jared Gardner, all
associate professors of English at Ohio State). The editors are very
excited about the opportunity to build on founding editor James
Tanner's work in making the journal an important venue for scholarship
on all aspects of American periodicals.
Since its inception in 1991 through 2003, American Periodicals was published
on an annual basis. Starting in 2004,
however, American Periodicals
became a semi-annual, publishing fall and spring, with a new look and
size.

American
Periodicals invites submissions of scholarly essays on any aspect
of American periodicals (magazines, newspapers, and other periodical
publications), from the beginning of American culture to the present.
Submissions that treat such topics as the editorial policy, financing,
production, readership, design, illustration, and circulation of one or
more periodicals are welcome, as are those that explore the position of
American periodicals within the broader culture.
In particular, we wlecome articles that, like the periodicals
themselves,
cross the boundaries of several disciplines and explore the complex
ways
that periodicals have shaped, and have been shaped by, American
culture.
Book reviews, bibliographies, and notes of professional interest will
be
included.
American
Periodicals is a peer reviewed journal. Manuscripts should conform
to the 15th edition of The Chicago Manual of Style, be
compuscript, double-spaced (including quotations and notes), and be
roughly limited to 12,000 words. Submissions are accepted
electronically as email attachments (Microsoft Word only) at amper@osu.edu. If hard copy submission
is preferred, please send two hard copies of the manuscript, along
with a self-adressed return envelope and postage (unattached) for
return of the manuscript and report. Only mailed manuscripts that are
accompanied by correct postage will be returned. Electronic submissions
will receive electronic reports. Also, with all submissions, please
include a brief biographical statement specifying academic affiliation
and scholarly activities in the field of periodical studies.
