I became interested in Z about 9 months after I returned from a trip in Germany. Ironically, my wife and I lived only a few
miles from Göppingen and could see the Märklin factory when we went to the train station. We visited the Märklin Museum a
couple of times, and the husband of a co-worker at the company where I was consulting was a Z enthusiast. But the interest
only began as I thought back fondly on our 16 months in Germany.
On a return trip to Germany and a visit with that co-worker and husband (who are now good friends of ours and are the
"couple" talking in the Vynoksmark's Ski picture!) I bought a starter set. Subsequently I have expanded the "palette"
of elements with which I am creating my own "little" world.
Why Z? Three reasons: 1) I don't have a lot of space available. The 1:220 ratio allows me to make a comprehensive diorama
and keep the layouts contained. 2) It offers a rare challenge of making something that appears very real, but at the same
time is forgiving in its details. 3) Besides, it truly is an eye-catcher; an attention grabber. We've all heard it before,
but it is remarkably true: Z scale IS cute. The other word I have heard when showing my steam layouts: "amazing".
I am a pharmacist in Portland, OR with an interest in compounding and complementary medicine. To the benefit of my hobby,
I must admit I have a very supportive wife. Next time you are in the area, give me a wave hello if you see me on my scooter.
