New Year's Greetings
Throughout history, New Year Celebrations were tied closely to cycles of nature
and life.
- Early Romans observed New Year in late March when new grass and baby
animals were born.
- In Babylon, 4,000 years ago, New Year celebrations took place with the
first visible crescent of the moon following the Vernal Equinox (Spring.)
- With the mid-summer flooding of the Nile, Egyptian New Year began.
- On the first day of February, the Celts celebrated Imbolc,
a day of promise of new life.
In this Twenty-first Century few of us are so closely connected to cycles of nature. Sure, we
wear more clothes in winter, marvel at flowers in spring, prepare our tax returns in April, turn on air conditioning
in summer. Few of us dig and plant the earth. It is said that gardeners are true optimists. Gardeners plant
for the future and are today's custodians of the earth.
Whatever the custom, New Year is a time of renewal and a promise of change. We have clean
slates on which to create new goals and dreams. And so,
Happy
New Year!
