Artist's Statement: Intrigued by one nighttime photograph at Ballard’s 24th
Avenue dock, I searched for other locations of nautical scenes suitable for night photography.
Finding none where I as a solitary woman would feel safe, I returned again to the 24th
Avenue dock. Soon I was returning every few days in
sunlight and fog, rain and snow, morning and evening – sometimes to photograph, sometimes to just enjoy the peace and
tranquillity the scene offered – my nautical interludes.
On the border between the gentrified waterfront of restaurants and marinas and the working
waterfront of old Ballard, the 24th Avenue
dock sees a constant changing panorama of yachts, fish boats, tour boats, small freighters, and families enjoying a stroll
after dinner.
Nautical Interludes was on display at the Odyssey Maritime Discovery Center on Seattle's
Central Waterfront, January 25-April 24, 2003. Chromogenic prints.
