Journal Through Dan's Night
 

What would it be like to be Dan Hatch on the night when tornadoes ripped through his town?

Construct a journal using the materials your teacher has provided. Decorate the cover. Include enough paper for twelve entries. Add a few extra pages at the end of your journal for comments from the people you share it with.

After reading each chapter, refer to this page to find out the topic for your journal response. Pretend you are Dan and think about your reactions, feelings, thoughts, fears.... Use words and pictures to convey your responses.

Journal Responses

As Told By Dan Hatch--Tell about one of your "black letter days" and one of your "red letter days". Describe the days using details. Tell what made these particular days "red letter" or "black letter".

5:00--List the specific details that you remember from an important day in your life. Try to include descriptions using your five senses.

6:00--Describe how your family's life would be different if there was a new baby added to it.

7:00--Is your family more like Dan's or Arthur's? Why?

8:00--Describe what you're supposed to do if the sirens go off when you are at home.

9:00--What do you think was the smartest thing the boys did?

The Next Hour or So--What do you think of Dan's mother's decision to send the three children to help Mrs. Smiley? What would you have done?

Later On--Describe the varied emotions Dan must have been feeling. With each emotion, tell why he was feeling that way.

11:00--Was it all right for Officer Kelly to let Dan drive the patrol car? Why or why not?

Midnight--Do you think the tornado was caused by Arthur's bull-roarer? What do you know about the cause of tornadoes?

Early Morning--How did Dan's family finally reunite? Explain where each member was after the tornado had passed.

One Year Later--What caused the Grand Island tornadoes to be labeled "a first class freak"?

After you finish--Log onto the newpaper from Grand Island that reported on the tornadoes of June 3, 1980. Write a journal entry with a reaction to what you saw, read, and learned.

Conclusion

Now share your journal with someone in each of these categories: a classmate, a teacher, and another adult. Ask them to notice descriptive words, emotions, sensory words and illustraions. Have each person write you a note in the back of your journal.
