Do you know what to do when a tornado threatens? Find out what experts recommend for safety during a severe storm.

Task

You will create a brochure describing the proper safety procedures to follow if there is a tornado warning.

Process and Resources

  1. Look at the brochures your teacher has collected to see what a brochure looks like.
  2. Use at least one of the following web sites to create a list of safety procedures.
  3. Design a safety brochure for elementary students. Make sure your brochure gives factual information. Your brochure needs to be easy to read. You need to list the sources you used to gather your information.

Project Guidelines

Use the following guidelines for completing your project. It will be evaluated by answering these yes-no questions:

  • Does your brochure give safety tips?
  • Is the information factual?
  • Is the information written for your audience--elementary students?
  • Did you list the sources for your information?
  • Is your brochure easy to read?
    • Is the spelling correct?
    • Is your writing legible?
    • Do your sentences make sense?
  • Is your brochure attractive?
    • Is it colorful?
    • Did you use illustrations?

Conclusion

You will be sharing your brochures with another class of elementary students and with your family.
