Activity 1:
Fountain of Youth

In Chapter 5 of Tuck Everlasting, Winnie saw Jesse take a drink fro the spring. The author gives a description of the spring and how it was covered up to be hidden. After Chapter 7, Winnie is told of what happened to the Tucks after drinking the water from the spring. What do you think the spring looked liked covered up as described by the author? Would you be tempted to drink from it? Would you?

Task

Create a 3-D model of the spring using the author's description on page 26 of Tuck Everlasting. Write a cause/effect explanation to go with your 3-D model, giving the positive and the negative effects. Also include whether you would drink from the spring and why.

Process and Resources

  1. 1. Reread page 26 to get the description of the spring. Use materials that you could maybe find in your own backyard or a friend's to create your 3-D model of the spring. Use an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of cardboard or any other sturdy piece of material to use as a base. Even a large shoe box would work.
  2. 2. Read chapter seven again and make a list by using a graphic organizer to list examples, positive and negative, that told the Tucks that they were living forever.
  3. 3. Write a four paragraph cause/effect report. First paragraph - introduction; Second - positive effects of drinking from the spring; Third - negative effects from drinking from the spring; and Fourth - explaining if you would drink from the spring and why.

Project Guidelines

Use the following guidelines for completing your project:

  • Follow the description on page 26 of Tuck Everlasting to create your own 3-D model of the spring. Take note in how it was hidden and the area in which it was located.
  • Create a web (graphic organizer) to list the negative and positive effects of the spring water.
  • Your report should have an introduction ot get audiences attention, a paragraph about positive effects, a paragraph about negative effects, and an ending paragraph explaining your thoughts of drinking or not drinking the spring water and why.

Conclusion

Share your spring and cause/effect report to the class orally. Invite other classes in to view your springs and interview individuals on whether he/she would drink from the spring. Make a graph to show how many other students would drink from the spring and how many would not drink from the spring.
