Set in the future through the
eyes of a twelve year old Jonas,
readers learn about a seemingly
perfect community where there is no
war, no hunger, and no pain.
Everything seems perfect until we
discover that everything is planned
for all families. Jonas is selected
at the age of twelve to become the
new receiver of memories from the
giver and discovers the truth about
the society in which he has always
lived. He plans to leave the
community. He learns through all his
senses that there is more to life
than colorless, mechanical
living. This web-based thematic unit
contains resources and activities
for both teachers and students. The Teacher
Resources section contains an
overview of the unit, in addition to
ideas for establishing the learning
environment, resources, and
technology setup. It also provides
classroom management strategies and
a series of lesson outlines with
standards and benchmarks, lesson
timing, book connections, and
assessment
tools. The Student
Resources section contains links
to ten activities for children to
complete as they read the book.
