THE CHINESE CRESTED IS A MEMBER OF THE TOY GROUP: as such, please reconsider getting a Chinese Crested if you have small
children. Not because this breed isn't wonderful with children, but because they do need to be in an environment that ensures
their safety from accident. Children can't be unsupervised with these small dogs. A lot of breeders will not home their babies
with families with young children. Small dogs are wonderful for children, but some breeds are sturdier than others.

The gene that causes hairlessness in the Chinese Crested and other ancient hairless breeds is a DOMINANT gene. Hairlessness
is a mutation in most mammals, but is RECESSIVE. The Chinese Crested is the only breed of hairless dog with a gene for a long
coat. Because the gene for hairless is also INCOMPLETE, it allows for varying degrees of hairlessness. Charo is considered
a True Hairless. She has very little body hair and is very light in furnishings. True Hairless can also have heavier furnishings.
Most of the Chinese Cresteds with very heavy furnishings are what is called a Hairy Hairless. These dogs have a lot more body
hair. Sometimes they can have so much they are mistaken for Powder Puff. Either type of hairless requires skin care. As
they mature the skin can get acne. Most owners can treat with products similar to what we would use on ourselves. And
like us, if it doesn't work you try something else. Then there is the Powder Puff. The Powder Puff has a long coat which
if not trimmed short takes a lot of care especially in the transition time between the puppy coat and adult coat. Both varieties
have large erect ears. In some countries outside the U.S. the Powderpuff can be shown with dropped ears. Either variety
can be shown with shaved face and ears or not (or one or the other). It is usually at the preference of the owner. Both varieties
are very happy, intelligent, graceful and agile dogs. When looking at the Chinese Crested you can tell that they are all the
same breed, yet each one is beautifully unique!
