Birding Tours/Birding Guide

INTRODUCTION:

Since 1981, I’ve led birding tours and taught adult birding classes in more than 20 states.

Currently, I work full-time as a professional biologist and regularly conduct field surveys to identify common and rare bird species (as part of my job).

I also teach periodic adult birding classes at Merritt College in Oakland, California and elsewhere throughout the USA as an invited speaker-presenter.

MY BIRDING TOURS:

On both weekdays and weekends, I enjoy leading individuals and groups on freelance birding tours in California and elsewhere – and, in so doing, you may appreciate my:

- field recording equipment and its amplified playback speaker (used exclusively ONLY during the non-breeding season)
- my iPod/song playback equipment that contains hundreds of bird songs; and
- my background in “bird sonogram-song language” interpretation.

My 30 years of “Birding By Ear” ability and tips to better identify birds by ear have helped thousands of adult birders recognize and enhance their bird identification skills. I’ve also taught birding by ear field classes to park ranger/DNR-like professionals.

Please contact me to discuss your needs and preferences.

MY BIRDING TOUR GUIDE STYLE
(and options to best fit your preferred outing):

Typically, my birding tour guide style includes:

- Being flexible. I can start a birding tour early or later in the day. You choose. I’m adaptable.

- Picking you up in my vehicle or meeting you at an easy-to-find meeting point for a half-day, full-day, or multiple day birding foray.

- Giving you a free “Marin County Birds Checklist” (compiled by Ken Burton and published by the Marin Audubon Society) or other pertinent checklists/handouts related to your birding outing locale(s).

- Supplying you for the day with an extra high-quality pair of binoculars. In addition, my spotting scope is A-1.

- Charging you my standard rate: $100 is my half-day fee and $175 is a full day; a two-day birding outing is $300.

- Visiting birding locations that you desire or suggesting ones to you so your target bird list is addressed. Target birds that are special-status species/rarities in Marin County (and/or in California according to the Dept. of Fish & Game’s list) include California spotted owl, black rail, and California clapper rail, among others.

- Spectacular and memorable (and fun) birding is what’s in store for you when we go explore such birdscapes as:

o Point Reyes National Seashore (Marin Co.)
o Sonoma County forests and coastal areas (including Bodega Head)
o Muir Woods and nearby (Mill Valley, Marin Co.)
o Las Gallinas Ponds (San Rafael, Marin Co.)
o Tomales Bay State Park (Marin Co.)
o Or?: (You fill in the blank. I’ll be glad to take you there to enjoy the birds together.)
