Baker To Vegas
Challenge Cup Relay Race 2002

On April 20 and 21, 2002, DCS supported the San Dimas LASD team (Station 8 Team 185).

Our communications team gathered at the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas and Ibex Pass about 40 miles north of Baker, CA in order to provide radio communications between the field units and the Las Vegas command post.  A business band radio repeater was setup at Ibex Pass to provide radio coverage to the field units and it was planned to receive the repeater in Las Vegas.  Unfortunately, conditions prevented the reception of the repeater in Las Vegas.  That is where our motto "We will be heard" came into play.  We established radio communications utilizing a 2 meter/440 cross band repeater system in the amateur radio bands on top of the Rio Hotel parking structure.  To get communications inside the hotel room, we simply setup a handheld radio and transmitted to the cross band repeater in the parking lot, which in turn repeated the transmission to the Ibex site.  Operators at Ibex relayed information to the field units via the business radio.

Many thanks go to the Rio Hotel security team for their assistance to the Las Vegas Command Post radio team.  Their help proved to be invaluable.
