"Saving you from dreadful movies like Light Sleeper. My God, that was awful.
And I paid to see it. I paid to fall asleep to a movie called Light Sleeper."

Cat People
Director: Paul Shrader

Starring Nastassia Kinski, Malcolm McDowell, John Heard

Unlike many movies (and records) from the leg-warmer decade, this 1982 mystery/horror flick holds up pretty darned well. Okay, it wasn’t a great movie in the first place, at least not in, like, movie-critic circles. But the premise is pretty neat, and Nastassia is alarmingly magnetic throughout. (The times her German accent slips through the dialog are giggly good.) The special effects are startling but not heavy-handed, the music is some of Giorgio Moroder’s cooler stuff (Bowie sang the theme), and you can pick it up cheap on VHS at Tower. A guilty pleasure is still a pleasure, right?
